The Wet One from Canada writes: Hmmm...
Reminds me of some afternoons during my working days.
The dreaded mid-afternoon lull. The worst possible time for meetings.
I recall nodding off during a meeting in a tiny room with 4 people (as the junior person in the room).
How embarrassing was that!
To have it caught on T.V., well damn!
That said, I recall hearing from colleagues about a Canadian Supreme Court Judge nodding off during a hearing and banging their head on the desk!!!!
It can happen to anyone!

Gord Cee from Canada writes: Just for fun I like to compare this fine [ Cheney ] gentleman to our Chretien, a Canadian embarrassment
[1] Chretien is ugly, Cheney is good looking
[2] Chretien can't speak any language, Cheney is well educated and sounds it
[3] Chretien is arrogant with no justification, Cheney has lots to be arrogant about although he is not
[4] Chretien has probably committed fraudulent actions although admittingly never convicted, Cheney to my knowledge is squeaky clean
[5] Chretien has lots of street smarts although burdened with a low IQ, Cheney has both street smarts and a high IQ
I could go on and on but I'm starting to tire- Posted 29/10/07 at 5:49 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

This article is not an attack on Dick Cheney. When people are in the public eye, everything they do is watched and reported on. That comes with the territory.

I'm sorry, but did I miss something? I didn't interpret the article as Cheney-bashing.
If anything, it makes him seem more like a regular person.
Maybe we should all lighten up a bit. Or stop reading this 'socialist rag'.- Posted 29/10/07 at 6:35 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Interesting comment from someone using the term 'leftards'. What is a 'leftard', CD? Is that a play on the word 'left' and another word that most people would never use? You're worried about abuse? Take a look in the mirror.
I didn't see anything derogatory in this article. If anything, it seemed to imply that not much can be done about the afternoon sleepiness. So bring on the siestas.- Posted 29/10/07 at 6:55 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Watcher 1983 from Just around the corner, Canada writes: Well guys, just what is it about this article that makes it newsworthy? There seems to be common practice in the media these days to belittle people who don't share their own political philosophy. Remember Gerald Ford's stumble or Gilles Duceppe's visit to the cheese factory. Was this important news?

I hear you on that. I've fallen asleep in many a meeting - I wouldn't say the meal is the problem, I suspect we just have too many boring meetings. Personally, I think if you can't have the meeting while standing up, then it's too long; don't have it in the first place.
I lived by the spanish siesta rule in Argentina but found it very difficult to adjust to - I liked the long lunch, but it pushed back the working hours til 8 or so in the evening, and that prevented evening exercise and pushed dinner back til 10pm. Nothing's worse than going to bed on a full stomach.
The ultimate solution.. start work at 9, lunch from 12-3, work til 5, and standing meetings only! :)- Posted 29/10/07 at 7:11 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Jack Napier from Ottawa, Canada writes: Gill Bates from Wroxton SK, Canada writes
You say that it is Cheney's fault he is unhealthy. He has had multiple heart attacks, starting at 37. No matter how hard you tried you couldn't cause your own heart attack by 37. Cheney is not even that unhealthy. You are a cold hearted, inconsiderate person that seems somewhat happy that this man has heart problems probably because you simply disagree with his political position.
Also note that the principals of Canada's socialist health system, which I am guessing you support, is directly contradictory to your statement when you say that it is his fault (which it isn't) so he should have to deal with it. Our system in fact rewards an unhealthy lifestyle by providing health care at a cost to the individual that doesn't depend on how much he/she uses it.
Your ignorance and lack of compassion is an embarrassment to Canadians. How would you like it if one of your loved ones had a heart attack at 37 and I told you that it was their own fault and they should deal with it.
You disgust me.- Posted 29/10/07 at 7:23 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

It is because this left wing newspaper will take any chance it gets, including the exploitation of an old man with poor health, to mock the American conservative establishment and the Bush administration.

jeff franklin from Canada writes: Gord Cee from Canada:
Vee Pee Cheney also has five(5) draft deferments from da Nam.
While many men of Cheney's generation chose to serve and honour their country in War where 50,000 USA Service people died, Cheney 'pursued other interests'. Ironically, Vee Pee Cheney now advocates sending more USA Servicemen to die, while he 'pursues other interests'.
Vee Pee Cheney is a signatory to the 'Project for a New American Century'. An infamous document where the plans of USA evangelical/ Christian Fundamentalists and their Military Industrial Supporters are plainly spelled out. Iraq Part 2 was planned long before 9-11.
Vee Pee Cheney is complicit in the planning and carrying out of an attack on a Sovereign Nation, Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of dead, injured and maimed. A country destroyed.
Vee Pee Cheney is complicit in torture. What the Allies executed Nazi's for at the Nuremberg Trials, 'Verscharfte Vernehmung', Vee Pee Cheney and other current USA White House Senior officials now carry out as routine policy.
Dante aptly described the 9th Circle of Hell.
Mr. Cheney has an eternal reservation.- Posted 29/10/07 at 10:15 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

No doubt he was one of the conspirators behind the recent failed plot to drop nuclear bombs. Paul Jones from kitchener, Canada writes: its one thing to nod off in an office business meeting (something im sure Cheney would never do - to much of interest going down), its something else entirely to nod off while hearing about a State burning and people dying. he doesnt care because he doesnt have an oil firm based there telling him what to do. Cheney is a disgrace, and deserves nothing so much as the same gift he gave to his friend on a 'hunting' trip. this guys just incompetent all around.

Jay Wortman MD from West Vancouver, Canada writes: Back to the topic of afternoon drowsiness - I have to disagree with my esteemed colleagues who are quoted in the article saying it had nothing to do with food. My own experience with sometimes severe afternoon drowsiness completely vanished when I started eating a low-carb diet. From what I know of Cheney's health, he is a classic case of metabollic syndrome with cardiovascular disease. There are several published studies showing that low-carb reverses metabollic syndrome. It is too soon yet to say that it will prevent heart disease because this will require longer studies but I think it will eventually prove out in that instance, as well. But please don't anyone tell Cheney this, though, as I think the world is better off when he is in a somnolent state.
