A thumbnail history of Tibet
Tibetan history before the fifth century is vague, although the dynasty that eventually unified Tibet had probably established its authority by the third century.
The most important king was Song-tsen Gampo, who ascended the throne in 627. By the time of his death 23 years later, he had expanded his empire to include all of Tibet as well as adjacent areas in Nepal, India and China. He also moved the capital to Lhasa, a strategic location on the main routes to China.
