“Americans think that anything that's not the signals of a mall – anything that doesn't look like an indoor-outdoor mall – looks like crime, because that's what they've come to associate. If the front of a house isn't immaculately groomed, or if the storefront doesn't have the brand chain name, then they think, ‘Oh my god, it's in a bad neighbourhood.' They see signals like this and it looks like urban decay.
