Dion presses for broader Mulroney-Schreiber inquiry

Canadian Press

OTTAWA — Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion wants to make sure any public inquiry into Brian Mulroney and Karlheinz Schreiber also takes a look at Stephen Harper.

Mr. Dion has sent a letter to David Johnston, the academic appointed by Mr. Harper to review the affair, urging him to interpret his mandate broadly.

The Liberals have been demanding an investigation of what happened to a package of letters sent by Mr. Schreiber to Mr. Harper earlier this year, in which the German-Canadian businessman outlined his past dealings with Mr. Mulroney.

Mr. Harper says he never saw the letters. Bureaucrats in the Privy Council Office say that's because they never passed them on to him, but Mr. Dion is reluctant to accept the explanation.

The Liberal leader also wants to know whether there was political pressure on the Justice Department to avoid reopening a $2-million libel settlement made with Mulroney.

Mr. Johnston won't have the final word on such questions, but the University of Waterloo president has been asked to draw up terms of reference that will eventually guide a public inquiry.
