Chavez picks fights on eve of referendum

CARACAS — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has denounced assassination plots and intensified attempts to rally supporters for a tight referendum Sunday on reforms to expand his powers.Heading into the vote without a commanding lead in opinion polls, Mr. Chavez's saber-rattling may help gather voters around the popular leader while diverting attention from some of the package's unpopular measures.
