Busy bacteria may improve heavy oil yield

Scientists at the University of Calgary have developed a way of fertilizing the bacteria that exist in heavy oil reservoirs in order to improve recovery of hard-to-develop energy. In the laboratory, the Calgary researchers accelerated the natural process of biodegradation of crude oil to form methane, the basic component of natural gas.
