Not long ago, the Public Broadcasting System in the United States conducted a survey. It sent out videos of 10 performing artists and, without naming the singers, asked respondents to pick their favourite. First prize was something of a surprise: David Broza, the 52-year-old Israeli folk/blues/rock troubadour. It was a surprise because, despite the iconic status he has earned in his native country, Broza has never quite developed the same following on this side of the Atlantic.
