Canada could make national junior program history this afternoon against Sweden if goalie Jonathan Bernier, a Los Angeles Kings propect, can keep the shutouts going.
Canada has never recorded back-to-back-to-back blankings in a world under-20 junior tournament. Bernier and Steve Mason of the London Knights gave Canada its first taste of consecutive shutouts to open a world junior against the host Czech Republic and Slovakia, respectively.
It was the fourth time in tournament history that Canada recorded successive shutouts. The other three times were in 2006 when Justin Pogge blanked both Finland (4-0) and Russia (6-0), Mathieu Garon beat the Czech Republic 5-0 and Germany 2-0, and Allan Bester and Ken Wregget both recorded shutouts in the 1984 tournament. Bester bested Switzerland 12-0 and Wregget shutout German 7-0.
Canada has now gone 140 minutes and 36 seconds without giving up a goal in the world junior, dating back to when the Russian Gennadi Churilov scored a power-play goal with 36 seconds remaining in the second period of the gold-medal final, which Canada went on to win 4-2.
