In America, it's all about hope

Americans breathe hope. The idea that tomorrow will be, or ought to be, better than today anchors the national dream in a country that profoundly believes itself to have been chosen to lead, as a light unto the world. It matters not what others think about this defining mythology — Americans believe it.
