J Kooman from Canada writes: With Wii out-sold PS3 by 3 to 1, it will be interesting to see if there is any spill over effect on the HD DVD format war.

Chris Gover from writes: the original comment from J Kooman was:"With Wii out-sold PS3 by 3 to 1, it will be interesting to see if there is any spill over effect on the HD DVD format war."
still don't see how the Wii would affect that in any way, shape or form. the Wii isn't even capable of rendering anything over standard definition, so it's not even a concideration.
Its the XBOX 360 and the PS3 that are in the HD format war, although the XBOX360 is better suited to handle a loss, their HD drive isn't built into the machine, all they'd have to do if Blu-Ray wins is licence the technology and build a Blu-Ray attachment. If HD DVD wins, the PS3 is simply a Gaming console with a few movies that were released during the HD format war. They'd have to build the HD DVD format into new PS3's or have a seperate player...- Posted 18/01/08 at 11:54 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

It's easy to use and a lot of fun.
Definately the ultimate party game system....

Joe Lai from Toronto, Canada writes: I agree with Wii being a great party machine. But to compare the Wii to the PS3 is like comparing a fax machine to a multi-purpose printer/fax/scanner/copier. The PS3, simply stated, does a lot more (e.g. HD movies, wireless media server, Internet browsing, upconverting DVD player, capable of downloading games and movies, plays DivX and XVid formats... and the list goes on). The Wii, simply stated, plays games in a novel manner (e.g. through motion sensing controls). That being said, the PS3 controllers also have tilt motion sensing, although not to the degree of the Wii (and there are games for the PS3 that do capitalize quite successfully on this function). But to compare the graphics of the Wii to that of the PS3 (up to 1080p) is silly. Games like Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed, and the soon to be release Gran Turismo 5: Prologue are use near-reality graphics. All this being said, I had the Wii, played it for a few months and sold it on Craigslist. The novelty just wore off. I then picked up the PS3 when they had a great bundle sale and I literally use it about 1 to 2 hours a night (whether for movies, gaming or just streaming my music from my computer to my entertainment system). In my opinion, the PS3 offers the most "bang for the buck" and as the Blu-ray format acquires more dominance and more people become aware of the PS3's capabilities, I believe sales of the PS3 will grow comparable to that of the Wii's. It has been stated that many people had no idea the PS3 could even play Blu-ray movies and I partly attribute it to Sony being unable to market the full capabilities of the PS3. But if there were ever a more futureproof all-in-one media central product, it would be the PS3. For families that need to choose between the Wii and the PS3, ideally both... Wii for parties / PS3 for everything else.

Chris W from Sudbury, Canada writes: We bought a Wii back in the summer and love it. The only problem we've had with it is availability of the games. (My wife just happened to find a system on the shelf at the local Costco). Anyway as far as I'm concerned, it's the best system going right now for families and casual gamers like us.
The "War" between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD should never even enter into buying a gaming system. That would be like buying a car because the stereo system has features that you can't or may not be able to use.
I plan on keeping my Wii. If I decide another game system is needed in my house, I'll put the money into a Home Entertainment PC built the way I want it and play games (I can't believe I'm saying this!) for Windows.- Posted 18/01/08 at 1:53 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Ricky Bobbie from Canada writes: BluRay/HD-DVD reminds me of the bipolarity of Sirius and XM (except they ended up merging rather than one format dying). HD-DVD is toast but there are some bargains out there for the stand-alone players (I guess we'll see even better fire sales soon).
The PS3 is a great system, so is the Xbox360, but the Wii is definitely better for casual gamers. It does more with less and the zapper is great fun.
What I don't get is the sales for the Nintendo DS. I've not been able to find one anywhere for a gift for three months.- Posted 18/01/08 at 2:06 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Bob Fugger from Victoria, Canada writes: One can argue that HDDVD was killed by Sony's decision to build a BluRay device into the PS3. Had Microsoft done the same, the winner of the format wars wouldn't be so clearcut. While superficially, it may seem that Microsoft made the safe play by making the HDDVD device an add-on rather than a build-in, they sealed its doom and maybe even their own.
That's because it may not be as easy - as suggested in this forum by Chris Grover - for Microsoft to simply licence the BluRay from Sony. Xbox 360 is hands down the better system re: gameplay, especially online - and sales show that gamers prefer it to the PS3. I would suspect that Sony will have a long, hard look at the business case of making money on a licencing deal versus making a very strong competitor even stronger by licensing its technology to them.
Sony finally managed make us swallow their attempts to ram proprietary technology down our throats (unlike BetaMax, MiniDisc, Memory Stick)!!- Posted 18/01/08 at 2:23 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

J Kay from Canada writes: Bob Fugger: I have to disagree with you. I personally believe the PS3 to be the better gaming system, both for gameplay, features, and value. That the Xbox360 is out selling the PS3 has for more to do with the lead time the Xbox has had in the market and the fact that there are still more games for it. In the coming year there will be a number of games fo the PS3 which will I think quickly close the gap.
The other bonus with a PS3, no red ring of death to contend with and there is one game which I believe will make all the difference in the world in the fight, provided it's done well: God of War III.- Posted 18/01/08 at 3:32 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Birdy Num, Num from Canada writes: Just because the current Wii system doesn't play DVDs and Nintendo claims to have no plans to bring HD to the Wii system, (though are rumours they will) doesn't mean that there will never be a Wii system that will play HD DVD. So the point is that Nintendo having done its homework, in releasing an HD capabe Wii will choose that format which has the best shot at market dominance. This could even be within the next couple of years.
