A Canadian couple we'll call Chuck and Nancy have lived in the United States since August, 2000. Chuck, 52, is a computer engineer. Nancy, 48, is a stay-at-home mom. With a gross income of $104,300 (U.S.) that we'll convert at par, they are raising two children, ages 14 and 16. Devoted to his career with a major company in the state of Washington, Chuck figures he should be able to retire comfortably on $100,000 pretax income.
