A seemingly stable nation falling apart at the seams

WARALA, MALI — Looking around the village of Warala - where the richest person shows his status by owning a scooter, and women pull the community's drinking water out of a deep muddy hole in a rubber pail - it is easy to see why Mali consistently makes the list of the world's poorest countries. The majority of its citizens cannot read or write. One in five children dies before his or her fifth birthday. And annual per capita income is just $450.
