Those in the Centre of The Hockey Universe may not know it but Mats Sundin is not the only NHL player in the midst of a no-trade controversy.
Defenceman Rob Blake of the Los Angeles Kings said last week he will not waive the no-trade clause in his contract. He said he signed to play in L.A. and that is where he intends to stay.
However, as in the Sundin case, that has not stopped talk that Kings GM Dean Lombardi plans to trade him. But in this case, there is a little more substance to the talk.
Lombardi himself hinted broadly at the annual winter GMs meetings last week that practically all of his veterans (read over 30) players were in play. And Lombardi’s fellow general managers were saying Blake’s name was getting tossed around regularly, even by Lombardi himself.
