Greg Roderick from Toronto, Canada writes: I am disappointed by the lack of coverage regarding the smaller, but equally significant role played by the Millennium Scholarhip Foundation, known as the Millennium Excellence Awards. While the monies allocated to Excellence Awards represented only 5% of the overall budget of the Foundation, these prestigious merit-based awards helped address a vital and unmet need in university funding. The awards, which were given based on four criteria(Leadership, Community Service, Innovation and Academic Excellence) ranged from a one-time $4000 to a recurring $5000( $20k total). On an annual basis, approximately 1000 new Excellence Award winners were chosen from across the country by the Foundation and a committee of approximately 250 trained volunteer assessors, representing one of the largest merit based scholarship programs in the country. The Conservative plans for a nationalized grant based system address only one aspect of university funding, but fails to recognize the significant community contributions, leadership and academic success of this country's top high school students. While some of these young superstars may qualify for financial aid, others will not. Regardless, our country has just lost one of its best ways of thanking and encouraging our nations budding young community builders, lost between the cracks of this Conservative budget.
