"Tibetan protests spread to China's capital for the first time, with students holding a silent vigil at a Beijing university as a deadline expired in Lhasa for the surrender of those China accused of sparking the uprising," The Globe and Mail's Geoffrey York wrote in an article Tibetans stage protest in Beijing Tuesday.
"Thousands of Chinese soldiers appear to have regained full control of the Tibetan regional capital, where violent protests led to the deaths of at least 16 people on Friday, but scattered demonstrations were still erupting in other Tibetan parts of China yesterday. The Tibetan government-in-exile has estimated that 80 people died in Lhasa on Friday."
The Dalai Lama said he would resign as head of Tibet's government-in-exile if the violence in his homeland worsened. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao earlier accused the Dalai Lama of masterminding the protests against Chinese rule.
