When Sir John Templeton was a boy growing up in Winchester, a hardscrabble Tennessee town just west of Chattanooga, he and his brother Harvey built a radio receiver with parts they had scavenged. "Farmers from all over the county would come by to see the boys pull voices from the air," says his niece. Sir John is 95 now, so radio wasn't much older than he was at the time.
