New leader to draw Taiwan closer, but not too close, to mainland

BEIJING — The prospects for peace across the Taiwan Strait improved sharply on the weekend as opposition leader Ma Ying-jeou won a convincing victory in Taiwan's presidential election, but tensions with China are unlikely to end soon. Mr. Ma, who captured 58 per cent of the vote in Saturday's election, promised yesterday that he would move ahead with closer economic links with China.
