Shoppers line up for deals

Undeterred by the slowdown south of the border, Canadian shoppers scooped up new cars, building and outdoor home supplies, furniture, and electronics in January, redeeming holiday gift cards and taking advantage of tax and prices cuts.
Statistics Canada said Tuesday that retail sales jumped 1.5 per cent to $35.8-billion in the first month of 2008, just above the consensus analyst estimate that forecast a 1.4 per cent rise and following a revised 0.8 per cent gain in December.
