Dozens of scholarships, bursaries are available to students across Canada. Here's a sampling

It's no secret that tuition for an MBA program can be stunningly pricey. To offset the high costs, most Canadian business schools offer awards, scholarships and fellowships based on marks and other criteria. At University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, for example, about 15 per cent of incoming MBA students are offered an award or scholarship.

Here is a snapshot look at some of the dozens of awards available across the country. (Tuition rates reflect full-time programs and do not include specialized degrees, executive programs or student fees.)

Queen's School of Business

Queen's University, Kingston, Ont.

Tuition: $58,000

Award: Forté Foundation Fellowships

Value: $20,000; two given each year

Criteria: Awarded to female students exhibiting exemplary leadership (academic, team, community, creative) and diversity (educational and work backgrounds, career goals, ethnicities), may also consider demonstrated commitment to women and girls via personal mentorship or community involvement.

Rotman School of Management

University of Toronto

Tuition: $63,000

Award: Martin Ossip Scholarship at the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto

Value: $47,500 (approx.)

Criteria: Demonstration of outstanding contributions to the Jewish community and/or exemplifying ethics and values consistent with Jewish faith. Financial need may also be considered.

Tuition: $10,100

Award: Marc Cullen Scholarship

Value: $5,000

Criteria: Full- or part-time students considered; demonstration of outstanding potential based on review of candidate's work experience and motivation.

Schulich School of Business

York University, Toronto

Tuition: $42,000-$45,000

Award: Robert Krembil Scholarship of Merit

Value: $60,000 ($30,000 in first year, renewed for an additional $30,000 if student maintains an A average in first 30 credits)

Criteria: Highest academic standing upon entrance, minimum four years' work experience, excellent communication skills, leadership, contributions to community.

Tuition: $24,000

Award: Julius Schulich Award for Entrepreneurship

Value: $15,000

Criteria: Proposal for course of studies in entrepreneurship and new-venture development including statement of career objectives and role of program in reaching objectives, plus two letters of reference evaluating probability of student's success
