Original Six Fan from Canada writes: "Eastern Health CEO George Tilley told board trustees that it wasn't important to publicly release the total number of patients affected by the faulty tests." As CEO he was clearly trying to keep the lid on this fiasco and not publicly damage the image of it and himself.
By not being forthcoming about this mess, one would hope that he gets his day in court to try and defend his ethically lacking actions and then subsequently begins a new job search. He clearly hasn't got the messages recently when heads of big organizations have ultimately had their day in court and subsequent jail time.
In this case it could possibly be worse than the Enrons of this world because it involves peoples' health.- Posted 27/03/08 at 1:07 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Robert Boyd from Windsor, Canada writes: This great crap-o-cracy, where the pee-ons are treated with the utmost contempt by the people they hire.
What a pathetic excuse for a real country this has become.
All I can say, is good luck to Quebec - at least you can start over- we are stuck with this garbage forever unless we develop some balls and start electing real human beings instead of party hacks..- Posted 27/03/08 at 2:40 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Emma Hawthorne from Canada writes: As this PUBLIC BOARD's first duty was to the public, Eastern Health needs to now confirm the removal of all board members who voted to cover up information, failed to keep on top of the situation and failed to intervene at the earliest possible moment to ensure any patients who could then be helped were immediately helped. Every public board member in Canada needs to understand that they owe their first duty to the public interest. If, any board member discovers the board or organization he or she is on is involed in a cover-up, they MUST GO PUBLIC. As directors they should be held personally liable (and not some taxpayer funded insurance policy) for any bad faith acts (ie cover-ups), along with Eastern Health for negligence, etc.

Northern Princess from Canada writes: I seem to recall a similar story with the 'tainted blood scandal'. Seems to me that it too had a discovery, a cover-up, an admission and an enquiry with recommendations as the enquiry wasn't there to blame anyone ... just make sure it never happened again. What happened to the big-wigs? Same will happen in this case, I'm afraid.

Emma Hawthorne from Canada writes: Too many of these board members forget that their client is really the public interest. The duty of board counsel is NOT to help protect board members from claims of negligence or cover up made by members of the public. Board members who want that kind of protection can hire their own private counsel. It is high time that all Canadian boards, tribunals, agencies and commissions adopted a standard of legal counsel conduct that made this clear. Poor legal standards, sloppy governance, a complete lack of accountability and a complete failure of good stewardship are destroying the fabric of Canadian democracy while harming and killing too many people in Canada. It is the same old story whether it is the Red Cross, the RCMP, the Vancouver Police Department, Border Services, the Ontario Coroner's Office, etc. We have had enough. Even One casualty is too many. This hijacking of the public interest for personal gain or personal protection must be brought to an end. Those who are not prepared to accept the responsibilities and legal consequences of sitting on a public board, tribunal, agency or commission need to step down or be removed today. However, all must be brought to account.

larry hallatt from Canada writes: Where is the Premier and Health Minister? Heads should roll. The Province needs to take over the Eastern Health Group and set up a Newfoundland and Labrador Crown Hospital Corporation. It then needs to set up monitoring and independent auditing of each facility. This is as bad as the Blood cover up.......who is being fired for the cock up and the cover ups. Who is charged with manslaughter? Will the executives get a bonus this year for fine performance like the corporate thieves????
