For tenor Michael Schade, the best thing about vocal recitals is that they offer a window into an age before the era of electronic entertainment. "Think of a time when there was no radio, a time when the only way to make music was to get together," he says, and it's not hard to imagine a few couples, friends and family, in someone's drawing room, gathered around the piano to try a song by Schubert or an air from a popular operetta.
