Case of jailed Canadian in Mexico to be resolved in 'next weeks'

The Canadian Press

WASHINGTON — Mexico's foreign secretary says she hopes the case of imprisoned Canadian Brenda Martin will be resolved in the coming weeks.

Patricia Espinosa, the Mexican minister, points out the judiciary is independent but the government has been encouraging judges to resolve Ms. Martin's case as quickly as possible.

Ms. Martin has been in a Mexican prison for more than two years on criminal allegations in connection to an investment scam run by her former boss.

Without giving an exact time frame, Ms. Espinosa says she hopes the legal process in Martin's case will come to a final resolution within “the next weeks.”

Ms. Espinosa made the comments at a news conference in Washington after meeting Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
