"Google and Yahoo together control about 81 per cent of the U.S. search market, according to the most recent data from comScore Media Metrix. If Yahoo were sold to Microsoft, those two companies would have a combined 31 per cent market share in the United States— far behind Google's 59 per cent."

The math ... does not add up.
G Y = 81
M Y = 31
Assume M G Y = 100,
then M = 19, Y=12 and G = 69. (NOT 59).

Eric B from Calgary, Canada writes: J Kooman,
The math is likely correct. The problem may be your assumption that Y M G = 100.
Did you consider that perhaps there are other (much much smaller) players? According to my math, they would hold a combined 10%:
1) G = 59 (given)
2) If G Y = 81, then Y must = 22
3) If M Y = 31, we now know Y = 22, so M must = 9
4) So, 59 22 9 = 90, so 10% of the market is unaccounted for are belongs to all the other search engines combined.
