Kane named to U.S. team

Canadian Press

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Forward Patrick Kane, the first player selected in last year's NHL entry draft, was among 17 players named Wednesday to the U.S. team that will play in next month's world hockey championship.

Kane had 21 goals and 51 assists this season with the Chicago Blackhawks. Other fellow NHL rookies selected to the squad were forward Peter Mueller (22 goals, 32 assists with Phoenix) and defenceman Tom Gilbert (12 goals, 20 assists with Edmonton).

Nine of the players selected have previous world championship experience, including former OHL star Patrick O'Sullivan of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings.

The Americans will play an exhibition game against Sweden on April 27 before opening the world tournament against Latvia on May 2.

This year's world hockey championship is being held in Halifax and Quebec City.
