  1. Martyn Whitt from toronto, Canada writes: I hope the West's "anti-colonialists", and other such similar delusions of the left is happy with the outcome of their Marxist creation. After 100 years of socialism, we're yet to see any good come of it, yet we keep trying. Isn't that the definition of insanity, trying the same thing but hoping for a different result? Well we get great Che t-shirts!

  3. robert quinn from Japan writes: Yeah, right, Martyn. And how quickly you reactionary types forget that had Batista and his Mafia cronies not been overthrown, Zimbabwe would have remained a cesspool of cupidity, nepotism, and widespread impoverishment. Instead, they have benefited handsomely from their embrace of socialist precepts, these being...er...sorry. Wrong thread. Carry on.
  4. Martyn Whitt from toronto, Canada writes: Yes Robert Quinn you're not the thread about the Cuban yachting celebrations they use to mark their freedom. It is amazing how they risk their lives on their yachts built of old drums and empty plastic water containers to spread their message in the United States.
  5. Michael Peters from Toronto, Canada writes: robert - Ha!
    Martyn - agreed.
  6. Sev Scott from Calgary, Canada writes: There was a funny sight from the UN this morning of the "old boys" laughing, hugging, shaking hands and all I could think of was all those Zim refugees I saw a few months back in Richards Bay, and Capetown, living in the bushes, baking in the sun, selling their handicrafts, telling me how things were better with Smith because at least they had food, safety, education, and shelter. Yeah, things will never be great in Africa due to the tribalism and the fact that unlike the Northern cold countries you HAVE to work to survive (Southern Africa you just have to spit and plant a seed and it will grow), but these problems come to Canada, with the refugees. At least with the Zim's, they speak English and do have the rudiments of a western education.
  7. Mike Sumners from Toronto, Canada writes: Gosh, are there really military dictatorships in Africa?!?! That's why I read the Globe, to learn something new every day.
  8. B.C. Expat from Ottawa-Hull, NCR, Canada writes: Many of these men said in the weeks before the election that they would refuse to accept a victory for anyone other than Mr. Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party.

It's a good thing they spent all that money on holding an election, then.

This is one sad state of affairs.
  9. MKK Flatron from Waterloo, Canada writes: Sev Scott/ the fact that unlike the Northern cold countries you HAVE to work to survive (Southern Africa you just have to spit and plant a seed and it will grow)

That's gross misconception. For most of the world's history, it was the warmer countries that were wealthier than colder countries. Of course, you can't have it too hot or you will have a desert.

Also, Europe's temperate climate is one of the reasons that made it able to sustain itself. It's a whole lot of bull that Europe's colder climate made the region inhospitable and therefore made the Europeans independent and enterprising.
  10. Sev Scott from Calgary, Canada writes: Southern Africa is the most fertile place on Earth, both in term of women and plants. Nampula Province in Mozambique could feed all of Europe, but does not. When I was in Nacala 6 months ago I met a Danish (NGO) guy iwho was wrapping up an 8 year program that taught farmers how to be more productive than they were. The program was terminated because the farmers in the control group, after 8 years, were doing poorer than those outside of it. All I am saying is that your cost of living is much lower (when you live day to day), than if you were living in Edmonton or Churchill. I was trying to draw a nexus with work ethic. Food drops out of the trees around there (and money too, after the Rod Black commericals run before Christmas).

It is too bad some of them could not have stayed.
  13. Nigel Rollo from Canada writes: For the "blame it on the colonialists" bunch.
A couple of days ago I read an article on the South African "Mail & Guardian " site (http://www.mg.co.za/) which stated that a Chinese freighter was no being allowed to unload its cargo in the port of Durban due to irregularities in the paperwork. Part of the cargo was weapons destined for ....Zimbabwe.
What is the common thread through these places in crisis: Burma ruled by military junta. Sudan ruled by military junta. Zimbabwe effectively ruled by military junta. All heavily supported by...China. Maybe it is time for the Chinese neo-colonialst, imperialist, militaristic people to apologise to the world for the trouble and strife that they are causing, rather than demand that CNN apologise to the Chinese people for calling a "Spade a Spade". And the there is Tibet...

PS. The Mail & Guardian site has quite a few articles dealing with the Zim siuation for those of you who might like another perspective.
