Hamas ready to deal with Israel, Carter says

JERUSALEM — Hamas is willing to accept a settlement agreement negotiated with Israel as long as Palestinians approve the deal, former U.S. president Jimmy Carter said yesterday at the conclusion of his controversial nine-day tour of the Mideast. But while the Islamist group said it would accept a Palestinian state alongside Israel based on pre-1967 borders, it refused to formally recognize the Jewish state and would offer only a 10-year truce.
