Don Cherry condemned the vandalism in Montreal on Monday night, comparing it to behaviour in a third-world country.
Following up on a statement made by Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay, the Hockey Night In Canada commentator said the news of the looting “is all through the States and everybody's talking about Montreal. It's like Bangladesh or something, doing stuff like that. It's ridiculous.”
Tremblay said earlier this week that the riot, which followed the Montreal Canadiens' victory over the Boston Bruins, had tarnished the image of Montreal and Canada “throughout the world.”
Cherry, who was taken to task in Montreal for supporting the Bruins over the Canadiens, made his comments tonight on the Coach's Corner first intermission segment of the Philadelphia Flyers-Canadiens telecast last night.
He wondered what sort of civic disorder would occur if the Canadiens win their next series.
“In the first round doing something like that, what will they do in the second round?” he asked.
However, he described Tremblay as “tough” and somebody who would be able to handle the trouble.
