Conservatives say getting Martin transferred to Canada not easy

The Canadian Press

OTTAWA — A Conservative MP says the federal government can't just snap its fingers and bring Brenda Martin back to Canada.

Rick Norlock says the opposition is mistaken when it claims the government is dragging its feet and preventing Martin's quick handover to Canadian authorities.

Liberal MP Dan McTeague has said Ms. Martin spoke with Mexican authorities, who told her Thursday they were prepared to release her to Canadian officials.

But in response Mr. Norlock says there's a process that needs to be followed before Martin can be handed over to Canada.

Mr. Norlock and fellow Tory Jason Kenney are in Mexico where they will meet with Ms. Martin and with Mexican officials to try to expedite her prisoner transfer to Canada.

A Mexican judge found Ms. Martin guilty this week of involvement in an ex-boss's Internet fraud scheme and sentenced her to a minimum of five years in jail and fined her 35,800 pesos.

Mr. Norclock made his remarks in an interview Friday with radio station CJBQ in Belleville, Ont.
