  1. boom boom from Canada writes: Hoo hoo, down he goes! You won't be lovin' life for the next while Rog!
  2. dale spinx from Canada writes: he also shot lassie and swore at a baby.
  3. B I from Toronto, Canada writes: It's amusing how this man represented the American dream for so long. As it turns out, like most American dreams he too was vacant, lacking substance, truth, sensibility and credibility.
  4. J.C. Davies from Canada writes:
'B I from Toronto, Canada writes: It's amusing how this man represented the American dream for so long.'

No. Cal Ripken Jr. was the personification of the American dream. Clemens has been contraversial since entering the major leagues.
  5. dean spence from Canada writes: ' he too was vacant, lacking substance, truth, sensibility and credibility. '

I would think you might have some sympathy for that condition.
  6. joseph Cheng from Toronto, Canada writes: What's the big deal? An alleged steroid user and also an alleged womanizer? This is as American as apple pie! Nevertheless, baseball is still a great game. There are many honest and decent guys who make a good living playing this game but at the same time as in any other profession, there are all sorts of cheaters and egomaniacs. The likes of Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds will probably end up as footnotes somewhere in the dustbins of history of professional baseball.
  7. Milos Gravity from Canada writes: Well, this fall from grace is pretty much complete. Suck as a pitcher in your final game with the Yankees, look like a fool in front of Congress, then on 60 Minutes, blame your wife for taking 'roids, get indicted and then have a relationship with a 15 year old girl come to light.
  8. g h from Canada writes: I imagine that being Mrs. Roger Clemens has lost some of its lustre.
  9. Devon White from Canada writes: That's because most of the comments on the board are insubstantiated critiques that we've all heard before. They don't get anyone anywhere.
  10. Jon Butlin from Canada writes: joseph Cheng from Toronto, Canada writes: What's the big deal? An alleged steroid user and also an alleged womanizer?

If he sexual relations with her when she was 15, he's not a womanizer, he's a pedophile... what a wonderful human being this POS is!
  11. Mr. Coffee from Victoria, Canada writes: If the accusations are proven, goodbye Cooperstown.
  12. Dwide Schrude from Canada writes: I've read a lot of news today and I'm a little confused but just to be clear, Rogers Clemens had an affair with 15 year old Miley Cyrus and had her locked in a cellar in Austria. Right?
  13. max from edmonton from Canada writes: Geez I guess Innocent till proven guilty went out of fashion. Before we go calling Clemens a pedophile there should at least be some evidence.

I can't think of too many things more serious than that.

I agree with the poster who is questioning the Globe and mails rationale in choosing which stories can or can't be commented on.
  14. Larfing Outloud from Virgin Islands (British) writes: Dwide Schrude from Canada writes: I've read a lot of news today and I'm a little confused but just to be clear, Rogers Clemens had an affair with 15 year old Miley Cyrus and had her locked in a cellar in Austria. Right?

    Thanks for the larf, Dwide.
  15. g h from Canada writes: Erik Richards, as you are no doubt aware, stories re Aboriginal people quickly degenerate into thinly disguised hate forums; I presume this is why they either get shut down quickly or not opened up at all. Which is too bad because the potentilal for interesting and lively debate is strong, but ignorant hatemongers pounce and take over.
What bothers me even more is when the Globe won't allow discussion on, for example, any of the Conrad Black stories during his trial.
As for unsubstantiated rumours about Clemens, the Globe is just publishing something off the AP service. That doesn't mean they aren't being a little reckless but I would bet they are not exposing themselves to any liability. After all Clemens has admitted to the relationship.
  16. Patrick P-A from Canada writes: Jon Butlin from Canada writes:

Just until a month ago, I believe the age of consent in Canada was 14. They've just raised it to 16. Before we call him a pedophile we should take a look at our own definition of the word. If it occured in Toronto while the Sox were playing the Jays, he would have done nothing wrong.
  17. Kev Jack from United States writes: Why does this have to be an American thing? Has there never been a Canadian superstar on steroids? People are people regardless of the country they live in!
  18. Rich Betts from Philadelphia, United States writes: B I from Toronto and Joseph Cheng:

Clemens is an idiot. But this is not a uniquely American thing.

My, my how quickly people forget. Does anyone remember Ben Johnson?

Not only did Johnson test positive for steroids, he admitted to steroid use, was stripped of his medals and world records and was suspended until 1991. In 1993, he was again caught doping and was banned for life.

But Johnson wasn't done yet. He made news again for becoming the personal soccer coach to the son of Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi. Gaddafi’s son made an Italian team, but was also booted for doping. Hmm. . . wonder where he learned that little trick?

Just goes to show their are nitwits and scumbags from all walks of life and from all different countries.
  19. Slim Whitman from United States writes: A look at some high-profile drug scandals surrounding Canadian athletes: Kofi Yevakpor, sprinter: Banned for four years after testing positive at the Harry Jerome Track Classic in June 2001. Eric Lamaze, equestrian rider: Missed 2000 and 1996 Olympics after testing positive for cocaine use. Robin Lyons, hammer throw: positive test for anabolic steroid. Eric Chevrier, weightlifter: Banned for life. Steve Vezina: Roller hockey player whose team was stripped of gold medal at 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg after he tested positive for nandrolone. Glenn Ennis, rugby: Canadian international given four-year suspension after testing positive for cocaine. Suspension overturned in July 1999 because of 'exceptional circumstances.' Ben Johnson, sprinter: Caught using steroid stanozolol at 1988 Summer Olympics. Stripped of gold medal, world record time in 100 metres. Banned for two years. Banned for life after testing positive again in 1993. Tested positive for a banned diuretic in October 1999. Silken Laumann, rower: Tested positive for banned stimulant. Laumann and three teammates stripped of gold medal. Roger Harripersad, racquetball: Suspended for four years. Cheryl Thibedeau, sprinter: Banned for life after testing positive for steroids in 1992. Jack McCann, disabled weightlifter: Tested positive for stanozolol in 1991, stripped of national championship gold medal in weightlifting and suspended for two years. Brian Morrison, sprinter: Suspended for two years after testing positive for steroids. Julie Rocheleau, hurdler: Suspended for two years after testing positive for steroids. Terry Hadlow and Luc Chagnon, weightlifters: Dropped from Olympic team after positive test for steroids. Oral O'Gilvie, triple jumper: Four years for doping infraction. Guy Greavette and Michel Viau, weightlifters: Stripped of medals after testing positive for steroids.
  20. max from edmonton from Canada writes: Slim Whitman.

Just a note re your list. Silken Laumann was punished for taking a cold medication that was reccommended to her by medical staff. She and her team mates were stripped of medals, and according to the rules justifiably so.

That said. Silken Laumann has never made any attempt to hide this incident and pretty much everyone admits this was an honest mistake. Laumann has apologized to her team mates and to Canada as well.

I am not in favor of including Laumann on any list of "drug scandals". In my opinion the only real scandal (mild as it is) was that she was punished at all given the circumstances.

I would be proud if my daughter looked at Silken Laumann as a role model.
  21. MJ M from Fort McMurray, Canada writes: The guy is a train wreck, that is the only explanation why anyone is interested in him.
  22. Hung Long from Hong Kong writes: He was helping her do her homework. What a great guy!
  23. Slim Whitman from United States writes: Max from Edmonton:

You are right about Silken Laumann. I apologize for including her on this list. I think she made an honest mistake and her punishment was extremely harsh.

I too would be proud if my daughter looked at Silken Laumann as a role model.

    My apologies again.
  24. Frank Smith from Canada writes: Slim ... a little sensitive there pal? I'm sure the American list ... beginning with Marion Jones and the many medals won by cheating ... is just as long. Kudos for your research though ... too much time on your hands perhaps. The comments posted are not an anti-American thing (read the post immediately above yours) ... they are comments on a person who happens to be an American.

Look at it this way ... if it's true, Roger's in good company with your former president ... what was the line again ... "I did NOT have sexual relations with THAT woman!!"?
  25. M Poland from Calgary, Canada writes: If true, Jon Butlin, it would make Clemens a hebophile.
  26. Rich Betts from Philadelphia, United States writes: Just a note on Silken Laumann: she is a pretty amazing person. After her accident in 1992, she endured five operations and a total stay in the hospital of several weeks. She was back on the water training a few months later. Her efforts paid off with a bronze medal, and she was subsequently named Canadian of the Year by the Canadian Club and was selected to carry the Canadian Flag in the closing ceremonies of the Olympics. After a one-year absence to allow the injury to further heal, Laumann resumed competing in 1994, and won a silver at the 1995 World Championships. She also won a gold medal as part of a quad sculls team at the 1995 Pan American Games, but was subsequently stripped of the medals after testing positive for pseudoephedrine (which she accidentally ingested due to a mix-up in what cold medicine she could safely use). Most people think her punishment and that of her team was ridiculoulsy harsh. Her final competitive race was at the 1996 Summer Olympics, where Silken won a silver medal in single sculls. She formally announced her retirement three years later. Laumann was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and was awarded the Thomas Keller Medal in 1999 for her outstanding international rowing career. She is what competetive sports are all about and is an inspiration to us in the States as well.
  27. B I from Toronto, Canada writes: J.C. Davies from Canada writes: No. Cal Ripken Jr. was the personification of the American dream. Clemens has been contraversial since entering the major leagues.

What kind of substance do you think Ripken abused to stay healthy for so long without fail? Or is that suggestion blasphemous just as it was heresy to suggest the American Golden Boy Roger Clemens is a cheat only two year ago? What was it that Twain wrote about sacred cows and hamburgers?
  28. aging oldtool from Canada writes: I just love 21st century journalism. The big show to hang Clemens by his own shoe laces over his alleged and apparent drug use, is starting to get a bit stale for most of us unwashed and casual sports fans.

So plan B is enacted and, of course, if it's not drugs, then (givin this is an American story), that other no-no, sex gets hauled out to finish him off.

Just like the rabbid religious extremists in Iran, Americans too are capable of finding evil anywhere when needed and sexual misconduct as defined by the clerics and their followers is always a sure bet to keep feet in the fire.

Perhaps someone can again explain why the US wants to free people from Islam's hold while refusing to even note it pushes American style Christian ethics on it's own people.
  29. Tom Sawyer from Canada writes: if you cant nail him for 'roids, might as well go after him for pulling a Jerry Lee Lewis!
  30. J K GALBRAITH from Canada writes: Based on what is contained in the article, it does seem pretty presumptuous and very close to a National Enquirer article rather than the good journalistic standards usually applied by the G and M.
  31. Cliff Pallette from Canada writes: Who couldn't resist that? She's as smokin' hot as Camilla Parker Bowles.
  32. bagoverhead guy from South Delta, B.C., Canada writes: Hey Slim, thanks for putting us back in our place...we kinda get carried away at times with all this steroid and druggie stuff, thinking it's all taking place in the good old U.S. of A., and forgetting we've got a pretty good list of cheats also, in sports, business and just life.

Great takes today on Jim Romes sports show...

Roger's flame is pretty well out now, and I wouldn't be surprised if his next letter is from his wife's attorney...

Cy Young's rolling in his grave!
  33. Dave T from Toronto, Canada writes: I'm no fan of Roger Clemens - to put it mildly - but I don't see how this has any bearing on the steroids case.
  34. J.C. Davies from Canada writes:
"Perhaps someone can again explain why the US wants to free people from Islam's hold while refusing to even note it pushes American style Christian ethics on it's own people. "

Is there a religion (or other philosophical creed) anywhere in the world where cheating on your wife is OK?
  35. D G from Canada writes: Slim Whitman, the difference is that Canada identifies all of its drug cheats. The US Olympic Committee hid soemthing like 50 positive tests and sent their athletes to the Olympics.
  36. Erik Richards from writes: G&M - I stand by my comments which you felt the need to censor. And apparently I'm not the only one.

And I still assert that you are condemning a man without proof. Such stories - and with NOT ONE QUOTED SOURCE - are nothing more than slurs. If there's proof, fine, accuse away. But those kinds of claims are not easily retracted once the insinuation is made.

Tabloid journalism. The Sun would be proud.
  37. Ricky for a Centrist Canada from Canada writes:
Suddenly, Pete Rose ain't lookin' so bad...eh, Cooperstown?
  38. Rob C from Canada writes: ...who?? is this news?...(this guy will not answer for anything with all his texas connections)...the NHL playoffs are on, who cares about this clown anyway?
  39. Rob C from Canada writes: ...(good one Ricky Centrist - very clever...that's a good question)
  40. Little Dickie from Beautiful Downtown Port Dover, Canada writes: As quoted in the Mop & Pail "McCready had a No. 1 single in 1996 with""Guys Do It All the Time." I guess she was talking about Rodger.....
  41. Lewis Armstrong from Canada writes:

Clemens' lawyer, Rusty Hardin, confirmed a long-term relationship but told the newspaper it was not sexual.

    --------

Clinton also didn't have sex with " that woman"
  42. R. M. from Regina, Canada writes: All they did was exchange "sheet" music.
  43. Ryan Hickman from Canada writes: Assuming he did have this relationship and it was sexual in nature...could he do time? just curious...
  44. Ryan Hickman from Canada writes: the new american slogan..."deny everything, admit nothing and demand proof. " repeat three times or until people go away and lose interest in u
  45. Waterloo Al from My Office, Canada writes: Figures - 49 comments on Roger the Dodger and none (before me) on Vernon Wells. We knew Roger was "on" something but who knew it was a country singer. Roger was up to this when he was in Toronto. Put's a new spin on TTC's "Ride the Red Rocket" mantra huh?

What a piece of garbage this guy is.
  46. Flames Forever from Canada writes: All my ex's live in Texas... Roger Clemens 2008
  47. Gogh Forit from Canada writes: If they ever admit Balloon-Head-Bonds in Cooperstown, they'd better admit Rose with a big apology. Each day that passes, Rose's infraction looks insignificant. Bear in mind that Rose did not bet on his own team.
    Pete's been punished enough.
