Duck deaths hurts Canada's environmental image: Harper

The Canadian Press

Edmonton — Prime Minister Stephen Harper says there's no doubt that Canada's environmental image has been hurt by the deaths of 500 ducks on a toxic oilsands tailings pond in northern Alberta.

Harper says this loss of wildlife should not have happened and he says federal officials are investigating.

The prime minister was speaking following an appearance in Edmonton today.

The ducks came down on the Syncrude Canada Ltd. pond near Fort McMurray earlier this week during their migration to northern nesting grounds.

Three of five birds taken from the sludge were flown to a veterinary rescue centre in Edmonton, but at least one of them has since died.

Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach is down playing the deaths, saying that wind turbines kill 30,000 birds annually.
