Earlier this week, I watched the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's speech in Washington with morbid fascination. As he damned America and celebrated his friendship with Barack Obama, he looked like nothing so much as a man casting a friend adrift while clasping him to his bosom. Critics of Mr. Obama have been gleefully suggesting ever since that the Wright stuff is the event that will finally end the Senator's White House bid.
