Gunfights herald 'declaration of war' in Beirut

Lebanon's fragile national unity appeared to have disintegrated yesterday as pro-government gunmen clashed with fighters from the Hezbollah-led opposition after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah accused the government of "declaring war" on his movement. Explosions could be heard in several neighbourhoods of Beirut and at least seven people were killed in clashes that were largely centred in areas of the capital where Sunni and Shia Muslims live side by side.
