Emphasis on the "A" wedding - we wouldn't want to go making too many generalizations ;) .

BobtheBaptist Saves from big t, Canada writes: Let us give thanks to Mellisa Mar-off and her generous offer to save us when the next American started war is dumped on us. Not enough that americans have already started a dozen wars and killed millions in their quest for world dominance but now they have their eyes on Canada and our oil and water. We beat them in 1814 and we'll beat them when they come over the border - we'll just leave a double cheese burger and a super-size fries and they can continue to eat themselves to death.

No one down here has their eyes on Canadian oil or water. Really, who cares? Your oil? Too hard to get out. Your water? Just turn it into beer and we'll all be OK.
That being said, what do you mean 'we' with respect to the War of 1812? Seems to me you were a British colony at the time so give thanks to the Redcoats. As for beating us, I always heard it was a win for the US. No more kidnapping into slavery of American sailors onto British ships, the invading Brits got their butts kicked out of Louisiana after the Battle of New Orleans, and York and Washington was a draw. Besides, that war was the second attempt by the Brits and Loyalist Canadians to strangle the United States -- the first being the Revolution -- and we're still here.
Congrats to the new couple.- Posted 09/05/08 at 5:15 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Melissa Maroff from United States writes: I don't own a shotgun. I don't eat cheeseburgers. No meat for that matter. I lived in Texas for a long time, but never was married to my cousin or brother. And like you, most Americans think this war is insane and will hopefully vote a democrat in office, although we realize it won't make up for the damage that has already been done. We also realize that no insane, power hungry leader would ever think of invading Canada or North America, it's a very sane world in which we live. And I know you're not all seal clubbers...I just picked one of the few, if not only story from Canada that continues to make world headlines and made a sweeping generalization just like many Canadians seem to enjoy doing.

Hail to the Conservatives ! from London, Canada writes: It amazes me that those who seem to enjoy mocking George W. Bush's language, obviously the Globe and Mail included, have never read a book. If you read Bob Woodwards trilogy, or just one of the books for that matter, where he directly quotes Bush from personal interviews, you will find that he is quite articulate and even more intelligent.
Does anybody else see the irony in the fact that Canadians feel more intelligent by mocking President Bush's obvious public jockeying, when quite obviously they have never read a book??

Paul Thompson from Canada writes: Edmond Dusablon, if you think the war of 1812 was a victory for the USA I can see where your deluded thinking about Iraq comes from. If the objective of the US was to annex the Canadian colony then they clearly failed to do that. Now, if I was to be totally objective about it I'd admit that the Americans could probably have been successful if they had been more determined, as after all they had 10x the manpower. The fact was though that this war wasn't very popular in your country, especially in the states bordering Canada, where many people had friends and relatives in each other's country, just as they do now. For example, during the battle of Queenston Heights, the New York state militia refused to cross the Niagara to support the regular American army, and eventually the invading Yanks were routed.

Melissa Maroff from United States writes: Paul,
Why does NWT deserve contempt and ridicule for using sarcasm to make a very good point? You just missed it. And why call Edmond a putz simply because you're a liberal and you perceive him to be a conservative. He didn't make one comment in defense of Iraq. Saying Texans *&%$ their cousins and that one Bush twin is hotter than the other is cool, gotcha. And that Americans should die eating double cheeseburgers and super-size fries (no McDonald's in Canada)...that's all cool. And you have to admit that the comment about Americans being after Canadian oil and water is as absurd as anything those Texas rednecks you love to make fun of would say. Although you sound educated and didn't make any of those comments you do come off as a hypocrite that just hates America. If someone were to judge Canadians just based on this forum they would have to deduce bitter, hateful, jealous and ignorant.- Posted 10/05/08 at 1:40 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Paul Thompson from Canada writes: Melissa, if NWT was making "a very good point" what the hell was it? Now I'll admit I sent the posting about sniffing gasoline fumes rather hastily before I considered the possiblity he was being sarcastic, but after all, sarcasm is the lowest form of humor. But, perhaps "contempt and ridicule" is a touch more than he deserved for his lame postings, I'll concede that. I didn't call Edmond a putz because I think he's a conservative, but simply because I thought his denial of the American intention to conquer the Canadian colonies in 1812 was a bit ridiculous, seeing as after all they did invade Canada. Finally, though I have made many comments critical of American foreign and domestic policy on the boards, I have never expressed hatred for your country and I have only good memories of my visits there.
