Knight: Pesch to TFC?

 By Ben Knight

Paul Peschisolido will work out with Toronto FC on Monday.

I'm just back from Oshawa, where I called a couple of youth soccer matches for the local cable station. Pesch was my colour man in the first game, and we had a lot of time to chat.

The Scarborough, Ont. native, who played youth soccer in nearby Pickering, is back in town to promote a special two-week soccer clinic he'll be running this summer. (The website is www.pickeringsoccer.ca, if you want more details.) While he's here, he's going to head down to BMO Field for a kickaround, under the watchful supervision of TFC coach John Carver, with whom he worked in Luton Town, and greatly likes and admires.

Two weeks short of his 37th birthday, Peschisolido is coming off the most painful and frustrating of his 16 seasons in English soccer. He tore up his Achilles tendon, and saw action just twice for a Luton Town team plunged into bankruptcy and doomed to relegation.

He is now healthy, out of contract, and looking for a new club.

TFC fans should know Peschisolido's preference is a return to the Championship, the second flight of English football, where he has played the significant majority of his career. He tells me a couple of teams seem interested, but would not say who, or whether he is interested in them.

Signing for Toronto seems a long shot, as the 53-times-capped-for-Canada striker has put down deep family roots in England. But a motivated, underdog side, coached by John Carver and backed by 20,000 screaming lunatic fans per match, is certainly … tempting.

At this point, it's all just kicking the tires. But if he's healthy and interested – well, it wouldn't be dull.

Let the rumours fly! Onward!

  1. David Bailey from Toronto, Canada writes: Why not! It would be the perfect way to end his successful career. Honestly, I've no idea if he could fit into this squad but at least he's not an international.

BTW, has any other Canadian scored more than 100 goals while playing overseas?

I fondly recall watching Pesch start his pro career with the Toronto Blizzard of the CSL at Varsity. I also recall him getting a red card at Varsity for kicking a Costa Rican in the trouser snake. You probably remember that one Ben! We were both there. Bad Pesch, bad!

We also saw him score his first goal for Canada against Hong Kong of all teams, way back in 1992!

I feel so old. I bet Pesch does too but what the heck. Let's give it a go, just for old times sake.

  2. Random Person from Heard and Mc Donald Islands writes: I think he'd be better off just stay in Championship League for another year or 2 and then retire...

Why would he join TFC for?...not the money?
  3. Andrew Bucholtz from Kingston, Canada writes: It would be nice to see a Canada vet like Pesch in TFC colours, but I'm not sure if it would be the best move for him. At this stage in his career, he'd likely have a hard time challenging Danny Dichio or Jeff Cunningham for a starting spot, and his minutes would be especially limited if the team sticks to using only one true striker at a time. If he can't latch on with a Championship side, I'd love to see him end his career as a TFC supersub, but otherwise, foreign football might be best for him.
  4. j mac from Canada writes: HAVING PLAYED WITH PESCH IN THE SYSTEM..THE WEE MAN WAS LIGHTNING FAST AND HE WAS A SUPER PLAYER..BUT THE CHEESY FAKE BRITISH ACCENT HAS GOT TO GO...KARREN BRADY IS THE MOVE HE HAS MADE IN 10 YRS..
  5. Random Person from Heard and Mc Donald Islands writes: If he can make the starting line up and make enough money then,yest....
  6. David Bailey from Toronto, Canada writes: J MAC! WE CAN HEAR YOU. PLEASE STOP SHOUTING! :)

I don't think his accent is fake. He's been over there since 1992.

  7. William Vander Wilp from Kingston, Canada writes: I remember watching him play when he was a member of the Toronto Blizzard in the CSL. A good player but that was in 1990. While I wish him the best, I can't see how he would fit into TFC's plans.
  8. Paul Hendren from Scarborough, Canada writes: I agree with both Ben and David. Pesch has made a career of coming in from the bench and scoring big goals. We need experienced Canadians on the roster and he fits the bill. With wife Karen Brady now trying to fly under the radar from the English media due to her alleged dealings at Birmingham City FC the family may want a Canadian vacation.

Kudos to TFC for recruiting Jason Bent for a coaching assignment. Let us hope that the many TFC supporters show up at Lamport Stadium on Friday night to create some atmosphere for the Academy team in the CSL. There is great potential to make Lamport a fun place to see a game.
