  1. Mike Quinlan from Gatineau QC, Canada writes: Thanks for the answer Konrad. I think one of the further points that has been forgotten, is that the ADQ is the official opposition in the Assemble Nationale, as well as finally having official party status. They have more money and ressources now than they have ever had. Sad thing is it doesnt seem to be doing much for them judging by their political downhill slide. Time will tell though.
  2. Gogh Forit from Canada writes: Quebec will never separate from Canada due to its staggering debt. Last summer the debt was 122 billion and accumulating at approx. $155 per second. I suspect that number is higher now, likely at $170 per second. That's why I don't bother with the rhetoric from the likes of Pauline Marois or Gilles Duceppe. The worst thing that could happen to Bloc MPs is for the province to actually separate, because then their paycheques would end as they would have to retreat to their nation and have Quebecers pay their salaries.
Nope. Separation ain't never gonna happen. The last time it was even remotely possible/viable was in 1980 when Rene came so close.
  3. Jacquelin Ouellette from St-Gabriel de Brandon, Canada writes: In response to Gogh Forit.

Hydro Quebec alone has a commercial value of at least $130MM.
Let put Hydro Quebec on the market and the Quebec debt is fully repaid. Never forget that. Therefore, your argument is wrong.

By the way, I never understood why some English Canadians are so anxious of Quebec leaving Canada but at the sametime they would prefer not to have to live with Quebec? I really dont understand.
  4. Lawrence Hutchinson from Houston, United States writes: Gogh Forit from Canada writes Separation ain't never gonna happen. The last time it was even remotely possible/viable was in 1980 when Rene came so close.

Really? The 1980 referendum (with an unclear question to boot) was defeated 59.6 to 40.4 percent. Hardly close.

As for the deficit - how about an ammendment to the Quebec constitution requiring a balanced provincial budget?
  5. Paul Collins from Canada writes: Now imagine Mario Dumont of the ADQ going to Africa, or the Middle East, all the while promoting Quebec separatism. The starving people and waring faction would look to him and his cause and call him mad and his cause worthless. Yes, Mr. Dumont is young and hip, but isn't it odd that such a person would make it into politics. In the US, a seperatist would not be able to run for politics, let alone govern. If Mr. Dumont were American, he would see jail time, but here in Canada, we like to please people.

  6. François Papineau from Montreal, Canada writes: Paul Collins: There is no mystery there. It's called a democracy and free expression. You otehr exemple is called a Monarchy, a dictatorship, a theocracy. Between these 2 models, I prefer democracy
  7. J Hare from Saskatoon, Canada writes: Jacquelin Ouellette, I'm just checking here. You are saying that hydro que. is worth $130 million or billion? If the debt figure is correct then Que. owes $122 billion. Aside from this, would Que. be willing to pay USA electicity rates for hydro as the company would then be in a for profit situation (and would need to continually invest in upgrades to maintain supply). Also, how would expansion work? The rivers are public but the dam is private (one answerable to the public the other to shareholders?). Just a few thoughts.

  8. J Nigh from Canada writes: She's saying it's worth 130 billion dollars. In French, a billion is called 'milliard'.
