Jays' Wells has broken wrist

Globe and Mail Update

CLEVELAND — The bad news just keeps on coming for the Toronto Blue Jays.

The club announced Saturday that centrefielder Vernon Wells has suffered a broken left wrist and will be lost to the team for six to eight weeks.

The Blue Jays also said that relief pitcher Jeremy Accardo is suffering from a right forearm strain.

Both Wells and Accardo have been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

To fill the holes, the Jays have promoted reliever Armando Benitiz and Joe Inglett from Triple-A Syracuse.

Pitcher Tracy Thorpe, who has been pitching at Syracuse, has been designated for assignment.

Wells injured himself making a diving catch in shallow centrefield during Friday's 6-1 loss here to the Cleveland Indians in the first game of the Jays' 10-game road trip.

Wells, who leads the Jays in home runs (5) and runs-batted-in (25) and was batting .281, hurt himself in the sixth inning and was forced to leave the game.

The loss of the two-time all-star and three-time Gold Glove winner is devastating to the Jays, who are already reeling from the losses of shortstops David Eckstein and John McDonald.

Both Eckstein and McDonald are also on the disabled list with injuries.

Accardo, who has appeared in 16 games with the Jays this season, is 0-3 with four saves and an earned-run average of 6.57.

Benitez has pitched one shutout inning at Syracuse. At Class-A in Dunedin, he appeared in seven games with a 3.86 ERA.
