Datsyuk dominant in Dallas

  1. Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Did someone say the Wings are a team of 'old guys'? Stars really ran out of gas in this one. Time to turn out the lights in Dallas. PS Datsyuk's hat trick shows how truly underappreciated he is. Ribeiro? A big goose egg for the Stars' sniper. Osgood? All he does is win. You have to feel bad for Marty Turco; his defensemen were pathetic at clearing the front of the net.
  2. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Stick a fork in Dallas!

These 'old guys' seem to be done with 'em.

    Cheers.
  3. Mariposa Belle from Leacockland, Canada writes: Dallas has to rethink the contract supplying the team with 'Ciment LaFarge' skates.

4 periods of OT with the Sharks killed the Stars. You play OT like that, you have nothing left in the tank for the rest of the season. A team like Detroit will bury you - and they will.

Clinical, talented and arrogant, an impressive squad.

I do have a soft spot for the Wings, since the days of Roger Crozier. Those who have donned the armour will know what I mean.
  4. Popeye Dillon from North Vancouver, Canada writes: I was wondering whether that garbage ice in Dallas was going to play to the Stars advantage. Looks like the Wings can deal with it.
  5. Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Former Star Dave Reid on NHL Network and Stars coach Dave Tippett were unequivocal in their post game analysis. Reid showed Brad Richards standing still as he let Datsyuk cruise through the neutral zone on the way to scoring the Wings second goal, and was properly scathing in his criticism of Richards. Tippett admitted that the game was pretty well over after the Wings made it 3-2; and said there was very little for his team to build on from this game. Again, one sees how the Wings don't panic (for example after the flurry that led to the Stars' second goal). They just execute. Can't wait for the Final.
  6. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: 3M Belle:

Cannot afford to get too far ahead of ourselves here because there is still alot of hockey yet to play in both these series...

However, you gotta admit that Detroit - Pittsburgh would be an incredible series to witness:

The Kids from the Steeltown versus the Motor City Geezers...

    Cheers.

    Miller the Insufferable
  7. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: I will be surprised if Detroit loses another game this year.

How Cherry and Melrose can call them boring is beyond me (on ESPN).

btw; Flyers aren't out of it yet (although I will admit that missing their top two defensemen isn't going to help).

Lets see one wins tomorrow before calling them dead.

Either way.... Detroit is going to take them to school in the final.

    Cheers
  8. g h from Canada writes: Roger Crozier!!! When we played street hockey as kids that's who I was. Loved his acrobatics. Also liked Doug Flavell of the Flyers for his flamboyance as well. Later switched to Bernie Parent, not so much for acrobatics as for his mind-blowing playoff performances. Best I've ever seen, before or since.
  9. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada:

Do you honestly believe that Philly is going to win 4 of the next 5 games without Braydon Coburn and Kimmo Timmonen. Of course, the loss of those D-men will force Derien Hatcher to log probably 30 minutes of ice time per game, a task that he likely isn't up to against the likes of Crosby, Malkin and Hossa.

Vomiting and dizziness after taking a puck to the head is never a good sign, Scott.

How full is that glass of yours tonight?

    Cheers.
  10. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: BTW Cherry likely called the Wings boring after covering the Pens series and seeing what real hockey talent is all about.

    Maybe, Cherry has converted...

    Cheers.
  11. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Ask me again after tomorrow nights game Robert :)

No I certainly wouldn't bet on it..... but I did pick them prior to the Timonen injury being reported..... and my pool picks are made up of Detroit and Philly players :(

    Cheers
  12. John - from BC Interior, Canada writes: I'm certainly disappointed in Dallas. The Sharks would probably have put up a much better fight, because the Stars have all but disappeared in this series.

We'll likely see the Pens vs. Detroit for the Cup, so the hopes of us Red Wings' haters lies solely on the backs of those kids from Pittsburg. I don't like the odds of a Penquins' victory though, because even the powerful Oilers of the 80's were swept by that juggernaut known as the New York Islanders in their first trip to the finals.
  13. Michael Sharp from Victorious, Canada writes:

Do Nordique fans cheer for the Avalanche?

Do Jets fans cheer for the Coyotes?

Do Victoria Cougar fans cheer for the Red Wings?

The Victoria Cougars defetaed the Monteal Canadiens in 1925 to win Lord Stanley.
Did you know the Red Wings were once called the Detroit Cougars?
Lester Patrick owned Victoria when he moved them.

    So there you have it.

    Detroit's Victoria connection.
  14. Michael Sharp from Victorious, Canada writes:

Did you know Victoria had the first indoor hockey rink in the world?

    It's a fact.

And that nobody reads this until they get up in the morning and the Victoria guy is still asleep for 3 more hours?

It's almost like you guys were on Mars or something.
  16. R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: That fascinating stuff, Michael.

Did you also know that King's College School in Windsor, Nova Scotia (established in 1788) adapted the Irish field game of Hurley to the ice and this game was documented in a book by Thomas Halliburton circa 1800?

    http://www.birthplaceofhockey.com/origin/overview.html

Did you also know that I have personally played Hurley in Ireland?

I involves a stick that looks an awful lot like a hockey stick except you swing it over your head like a hakapik...

Sean Avery would likely be great at Hurley once he gets out of the ICU...

    Surely, you jest !

    Go Pens!
  20. Bill Weston from Grand Rapids, MI, United States writes: I think we've figured out why the empty seats at the Joe.. seems a good number of Red Wings fans have moved to Texas and go to Stars games now to cheer on the Wings! There was an awful lot of cheering each time the Wings scored.

What an opportunistic group. Hank made Richards look absolutely inept on that short handed goal. And Marty 'the Wings are not in my head' Turco.. well, enough said about him.

Datsyuk was brilliant. What a joy to watch these guys are. Can you imagine if Datsyuk and Malkin were play for Russia at the Worlds right now? And Osgood.. hes there when you need him. Not fancy, not showy, and certianly no Roger Crozier but hes there when they needed him.

Has anyone seen the faceoff stats for last nights game? Just curious what they were.

    Go old guys! Go Wings!
  21. Allan Martel from Canada writes: It's time for some of my by now famous analysis of last night's game. You have been yearning for it, some, like Bill Weston have asked for it explicitly. So here goes - the views of your erstwhile and expert analyst on last night's game. Detroit plus 14; Dallas Minus 12 - To be expected in a 5-2 game. Missed shots - Det - 4; Dal - 9 - Not a lot of difference but indicative of patience versus increasing desperation. A missed shot is similar to when Loucks chugs his half-full glass and misses. Percent age of faceoffs won - Det 57; Dal 43 - One of three major indicators of what's happening - Detroit dominance. Hits - Surprising?? - Dat 20; Dal 47. This shows that hits aren't all they are cracked up to be and that a physical brand of hockey can be beaten by speed and great coaching. Mariposa knows this and that's why she should get a shot at the Leafs GM job. The major indicator of what's really happening here is Giveaways. Det 13; Dal 26. The Wings are picking the Stars' pockets left and right, winning more crucial faceoffs and firing more accurately at the net. That sounds like a recipe for victory to me. Miller knows this and he is right to call Loucks on his delusions. The Pens will now make short work of the Flyers (5 game series max) and then it's on to the greatly-anticipated final round with Gary Roberts and Chris Chelios doing Geritol ads during the intermissions.
  22. Stephen Dedalus from Canada writes: Why do the Wings' captains wear their C's and A's on the wrong side? Someone told me it's because the tip of the logo is too high, but why switch now?

P.S. I've heard some fearsome hockey vs. hurley debates, but to me, the 'hardest' sport in the world is definitely shirling. Take a shot of venom in the eye, get bandaged up, and keep playing--that's for real athletes.
  23. Sean O'Reilly from Canada writes: The 'boring old' wings put together another victory. Some poster on a previous board thought that if the stars 'pounded' on the wings 'd' men, that would beat the wings. Got your answer genious?

At times I felt the wings did not compete, and it was by no means their best or a complete game. Dallas did carry the play for the most part, but the wings scored on their chances.

And the stars, well they had every chance to win this, thanks to the officiating. Now I am not saying that the wings did not deserve the calls. But I felt that short handed goal was a perfect middle figure to the calls being made.

How on the stars first goal a holding penaly on Morrow was missed. After that joke, I knew the wings were up against it. But the pulled it out.

I find it laughable that Cherry and Melrose call the wings boring, the wings have to play to the level of their opponent, if they are going to trap, the wings have to trap, if they are going to grind it out, the wings have to grind it out. I love how its the wings, and they aren't paying attention to who they are playing.

    Bring on game 4!

    Go wings!
  24. Allan Martel from Canada writes: The final series will go six or seven games and it will be a humdinger.

As a poster noted above, the Wings execute their game plan superbly. The Pens are much younger and less experienced but they too have bought into Claude Julien's game plan and, although they are more erratic, they stick to their knitting most of the time.

It is easy to say that Detroit will dominate the next series as they have all other series that they have played in this year. I don't think so. The Pens are a wild card, not expected to be where they are and they have nothing to prove and nothing to lose - translation - they will play their loose and creative style of game that, by virtue of its unpredictability, is very hard to defend against.

Both teams possess blinding speed, multiple snipers and good goaltending. This could well be a series for the ages and I dearly hope that it goes the full seven games and then gets decided in double overtime in Game Seven.

I have no preference between these two teams as to who wins - I only hope that they both show up and play their best hockey to the delight of true hockey fans everywhere.

(And they said Penguins have no Wings - Ha!!)
  25. Gordon Howe from HockeyTown, United States writes: Hey where did all the Leafs and Sens fans come from?? Thought they would be onto more interesting pursuits, like golf and slow pitch. I love expert opinions from these same fans. It makes me feel privilaged. I wonder if Babs reads these posts and maybe uses them as a tool to show his Wings that you too can can prognosticate, but only if you're not in the playoff picture. Turco had a bit of a rough game last night. I believe he's the third hot goalie the Wings have faced. Unfortunately for these three hot goalies they hadn't faced the Wings. I've always said that the sign of a great team is to deal with adversity. With The Mule out, the other players have picked it up a notch. I also love that Steve Ott. I have no idea what he was doing, or trying to do out there last night. Maybe he left his brain in the hotel. He skates around like a madman looking for something, anything to hit. Meanwhile the Wings are picking pockets and this guy's looking like he's in the middle of a Chinese fire drill. I like the Wings chances but it's not over yet. There's a reason why the Stars are here. There a good team. Maybe two more to go.
  26. Gogh Forit from Canada writes: The Stars are the equivalent of Texas Toast
  27. Gordon Howe from HockeyTown, United States writes: Sean O'Reilly from Canada writes: The 'boring old' wings put together another victory. Some poster on a previous board thought that if the stars 'pounded' on the wings 'd' men, that would beat the wings. Got your answer genious......................... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now Sean, watch out. You could feel the wrath of the floating poster. The expert poster that knows all about the game. The poster that saw the Wings bumped around last year and feels that the same can happen this year. The poster that feels the Wings are the same as last year. That they didn't change their attitude or makeup of the team. You could feel the wrath of the floating poster who has to put their two cents even if their own team was history long ago. As for the punding of the Wings defence. I sadi the other day, you can't hit what you can't see. The Stars have a team of staright liners. In other words they go great in a straight line. When the target moves they make a big band noise against the boards. Sounds good for the home fans, and the announcers, but a miss is a miss. As for those boring Wings all you have to do is look at Barry Melrose and you have your answer. I believe the Wings with five goals last night have the highest game total in the two series? Why wouldn't they say that the Wings have the highest goals for, with fewest shots? Would they rather see a wide open game that the Wings score eight and the Stars two? You know what they would say then. They'd yak how the Stars were outgunned. When the series is all over one of those two experts will blurt out 'That defence wins championships'. Isn't defence boring? There's a reason why these two are announcing. They never had the game to start with.
  28. Popeye Dillon from North Vancouver, Canada writes: Michael Sharp: The real question is: Are you really awake during the daytime in Victoria? yuk..yuk!
  29. Alpha Sigma from Canada writes: I'd like to know how many people on these boards who are all Go Go Pens would have taken a free ticket to see that team 5 years ago when they were the armpit of the NHL.
  30. Bill Weston from Grand Rapids, MI, United States writes: Allan Martel.. thanks for the stats and analysis but double overtime for game 7 of the finals?? I dont think I could handle that, sorry.

Youre right though, whoever wins (think Wings) this should be the best Cup finals in years.

Did anyone else catch Scotty Bowman on The Fan 590 this morning? Interesting insights about the difference between the Wings this year and last year.
  31. John Nicholson from Oshawa, writes: The Wings are flying and the Stars are dieing, caught in the jetstream of the Euro twins. When your 2 best offensive players are your 2 best defensive players how do you play them?
The biggest difference in the Wings this year to last is the additions of Rafalski, Stuart, and Kronwall who was injured last year. When your 5th best defensman is Chelios with 20 odd years in the playoffs no surprise Detroit is the top defensive team in the NHL.
The Dallas NO STARS wait till next year.
  32. Sean Kelly from United States writes: Stephen Dedalus from Canada writes: Why do the Wings' captains wear their C's and A's on the wrong side? Someone told me it's because the tip of the logo is too high, but why switch now?

Someone told you correctly about the tip of the logo being too high; the switch was made when the NHL adopted the RBK uniform 'system.' Prior to that the 'C' and 'A' were worn on the other side because the logo sat lower, there was no interference from the tip.

If you trace the history back a little further, you will find that the 'C' and 'A' were once on the side currently adorned. Thus, the Wings have returned to their tradition.

BTW there is no right or wrong side for the 'C' and 'A'.
  33. Tom Sawyer from Canada writes: enjoy the high detroit fans. One game of banging doesnt make an effect. Dallas woke up too late and has no energy left in the tank from too much hockey. It's like body shots in a boxing match. They take time to add up. The Cup Finals will be a test for the old men. Watch when 1 or 2 defensemen get hurt and their replacements try to deal with Malkin, Crosby, and Staal. That will be an awesome series to watch.
  34. E. Biggs from Canada writes: Only saw the third and was looking for faults but apart from a couple of minor out of positions I think that is the best period of hockey I have seen from one team in a long long time.

They had the 'falling stars' so confused and bottled up that is was something to behold.

The coaching on this team is awesome. He got them all on the same page and focused. Some teams easier than others.

I know I have been there, and on some teams it is like trying to herd chickens but this group was a real delight. I did not fall asleep once.

My wife in my 60 years in hockey is so used to me bitching and complaining that she actually came to see what was happening. She thought I had fallen asleep.

    Beautiful

Any way you could sumarize his comments for us, Bill? I'm curious to know what he said. Like many of you perhaps, I can't figure out why this Red Wing team, which seems little different than those of the last few years, is suddenly on fire, rather than choking to the nearest Albertan club.

Personally I think Osgood is a huge reason they're doing well...he seems supremely confident out there. They're also doing some great work on turnovers, getting the puck from centre ice to the net in a flash. They don't give the Stars the time to crowd in front of Turco like the Sharks did.
  36. W R from Stratford, PE, Canada writes: And Turco is yet to have a big game in this series.
  37. Tom Sawyer from Canada writes: and Turco wont... Matt O's comment is likely bang on. Detroit was headed south until they made the goaltending switch and Osgood's success was able to turn the heads around. It isnt often you can get your back up goalie to play lights out.
  38. Gordon Howe from HockeyTown, United States writes: Tom Sawyer from Canada writes: and Turco wont... Matt O's comment is likely bang on. ___________________________________________________________

Tom isn't that what Toskala is? A back up? Didn't Raycroft start the season because Maurice said he was our man? As far as banging the Wings. The Preds did it. The Avs did it. The Stars are doing it. I don't know what you're trying to say Tom. Are you saying that the Stars are just softening them up for the Pens? We all know that the western division is tougher than the east. That was proven last year and looks the same this year. It's one thing to, as you say 'bang' the Wings, but the trick is to hit them when you start out to do the banging. The Stars may have led in hits last night but I wouldn't be too suprised that they were more misses than hits. I'm quite confident in the Wings handling of the banging. When the other team has four skaters on the ice it's kinda hard to keep banging.
  39. Stephen Dedalus from Canada writes: Thank you, Sean Kelly from the U.S. Yes, I knew that (ages ago) the letters used to be on the right side, but wondered why the Wings were switching back if no other teams were. I thought that Lidstrom's mom may have accidentally sewn the letter on the wrong side, and the other players made the switch to avoid hurting her feelings.

    Sens in 9!
  40. Matt O from Canada writes: Gordon Howe from HockeyTown, United States writes: We all know that the western division is tougher than the east. That was proven last year and looks the same this year.

    ===============================================

Why, because the Ducks beat up on a choking, coked-up Ottawa squad? Sorry, but a win over one of the most notorious bunch of playoff losers in NHL history doesn't prove a thing.

I still agree with you that the Wings have a good shot at the finals this year, but this West vs. East stuff drives me up the wall. As far as I can count, the East has won 3 of the last 4 finals.
  41. Rob C from Canada writes: Any word from the Proud Canadian? Compare and contrast the Sens' vs the Wings's playoff performance thus far....it goes to show, once again: Never count on the Senators, never count out the Wings...it is stupid to make post season predictionss during the regular season anyway
  42. Sean O'Reilly from Canada writes: I'm with you Gordon, I don't know what Tom is trying to say.

I think Tom has replaced the Proud Canadian for his bitterness towards the wings.

Its round three of the playoffs, did I miss something in all the previous games, were we watching shinny? Every year someone is saying they are too old, but every year the wings are in the picture.

Talk about when some of their 'd' getting injured. Tom, did you watch last night? Who came out hurting last night when they ran the wings d? Morrow looked pretty good hold his arm, and wasn't that Modano laying on the ice. The wings can take a hit and avoid the stupid running shots.

I've been enjoying the high my whole life Tom. Especially the last 14, that has included three cups.

....and its not too often the back up to start the playoffs essentially split the games with the starter during the regular season.....
  43. Tiberius Oderint dum probent from Canada writes: Wings and PENS, what an amazing series it's going to be.
As for Morrow, I suspect he's going to have some serious challenges with his left wrist tomorrow.
  44. Ryan M from Ottawa, Canada writes: Wow, Matt O and poor old Rob C just can't resist any chance to rip the Sens.

Cheer up guys, the Sens are out, you should be happy. One of the worst tanks in the history of the game. Fully recognized by this Sens fan.

Matt O - didn't you mention you're moving to the big smoke from Ottawa? Bring that sunshine down the 416, would ya? Nothing but positivity...sad to see you leave.

And Rob C - well, not much more to say. You must be Super Troll in disguise.

Oh yeah, the story at hand....Zetterberg and Datsyuk are simply phenomenal. Zetterberg especially. They were 6th and 7th rounders, no? Quality drafting in Detroit.
  45. Matt O from Canada writes: Ryan M, yes the move happens in the next week or two, though I'm a little frightened that you remember the off-hand comment I made about it. Are you taking notes about all the anti-Sens posters on this board? Perhaps I should look outside right now, in case you're watching me from the bushes.

Anyway, why would I be positive when it comes to talk about the Sens? What is their to brag about? Their playoff ineptness? Their divisive coke problem? Their arena out in the sticks? Their generally clueless fans? Give me something to work with and maybe I'll get back to you.
  46. Ryan M from Ottawa, Canada writes: Matt O - yes, I must be hiding in the bushes. Pardon me for remembering that one of the most negative posters on these boards, who takes every opportunity to slag the Sens and the city of Ottawa, is moving to Toronto. Couldn't be a better story...enjoy being surrounded by leafs fans, pal! That ought to do wonders for you.

And why would I give you anything to work with? There really is no point....you've just demonstrated your uncanny ability to put a negative spin on anything Ottawa-related.

Good riddance...and leafs fans, try to take it easy on Matt. If living in Ottawa got him this worked up on these threads, one can only imagine the heart attacks that living in the big smoke and being surrounded by leafs fans will cause...
  47. Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: Wings' success: proof that intelligence, skill, experience, cohesion and execution on the part of both management and players beats youth and banging. Watching Game 3, the desperation of Stars players looking for anything to hit while missing the net over and over again and failing to support their goaltenders just served to underscore those aspects. Dave Tippett's face and tone said it all. Detroit is a textbook example for the rest of league to learn from. Here's hoping the Wings and Pens dispose of their current opponents quickly so we can get on with a great Final.
  48. Matt O from Canada writes: Ryan M, your obsessive need to attack me is wearing a bit thin, but I'll say this: if thinking that Ottawa is a boring backwater with a lousy hockey team makes me one of the most negative posters on these boards, then I'm in good and plentiful company.

To be honest, I'd rather be moving to Montreal, or maybe someplace out east, but I'll take Toronto over Ottawa. Make sure to enjoy your traffic jams to 'the Bank', your lifeless downtown, and your crooked mayor while I'm gone.
  49. Ryan M from Ottawa, Canada writes: 'if thinking that Ottawa is a boring backwater with a lousy hockey team makes me one of the most negative posters on these boards, then I'm in good and plentiful company.'

...probably moreso the fact that you regularly include such thoughts in your posts....sorry to say, but you're in the same company as the majority of trolls. Good? Uhh....sure....

I'll be sure to send along your regards to O'Brien, though! At least we can agree on that...the traffic heading west is no treat either.
  50. Matt O from Canada writes: Ryan M, I will give you that my anti-Ottawa comments are unwarranted. They have no place in a hockey forum, and I just throw them in when I lock horns with Sens fans. In fact, I grew up here, and will probably miss the place in many ways when I'm gone. Anyway, I'll curb that stuff in the future.

Anyone who is anti-Larry is fine in my books. As for the Sens, I do wish some reporter would break the drug problem, as it seems pretty clear that that's what dividing the team. Murray will get rib of Emery and Redden and hope to sweep the thing under the rug, but I don't think you can get of it that easily. Not trying to cheapshot here, just stating the facts. Cheers.

  52. Bill Weston from Grand Rapids, MI, United States writes: Matt O from Canada writes: Any way you could sumarize his comments for us, Bill?

In a nutshell (and paraphrasing) Bowman was talking about how the Wings really believe that it should have been them in the finals last year instead of the Ducks, that they were/are the better team. And about how if it wasnt for the absurd penalty call that led to the Ducks winning game 5 in overtime, after tying it on the pp with 49 seconds to go, it would have been them. That said, theyve set out to prove it this year by being the best of the best. Hence theyve bought into the system even more that last season, theyre executing better. Theyre on a mission.

'These guys aren't Anaheim and San Jose,' Stars center Mike Modano said. 'Tons of skill. World-class players.'

Seems this is where you and I had our first discussion over the course of last season, you attacking posters with opinions different from your own. I think your venoms uncalled for. I come on these blogs to talk to other hockey fans outside the American circles and you know what I think of the Sens. All I can say is that Im glad not all Canadians share your anger or your bias. I really am disappointed with your comments lately. And to think I always took you as an intelligent hockey fan.
  57. Bill Weston from Grand Rapids, MI, United States writes: PC.. but neither of you two settle for just attacking each others teams. He degrades the city Ottawa, you trash the city of Detroit and now you're attacking 'a whole bunch of AMERICAN KNOW IT ALL's'. Thats pretty inclusive Claude, and its got nothing to do with hockey.

The only thing amazing about the series is how quickly it will end. Pens are no match for the Wings. Lots of potential scoring power but neither defense, goaltending or heart. As far as this year is concerned they might as well just give the cup to Detroit and save the fuel that will be wasted moving teams from city to city. It's over!
