  2. a l from Toronto, Canada writes: The thing is - if it is over for Senator Clinton, why do people keep voting for her and how is it that she can still win states? There is something the Americans need to learn about the pitfalls of a coronation. The lessons of Paul Martin's rise and fall are telling.
  3. Beatriz Perez-Sanchez from Toronto, Canada writes: West Virginia is one stop too many on Mrs. Clinton's 'farewell tour'. She is like a singer who is well past her 'best before' date but doesn't know when to stop. Rather than leave her adoring fans with fond memories of her once great performances, she will leave them with the pathetic image of a soon-to-be has-been who can no longer reach the high notes. Although her West Virginia performance may draw great crowds, Mrs. Clinton's inability to know when to retire may turn it into her swan song. (Well, it's time to put away the cliche-o-matic and the metaphor machine for now.)
  4. D M from Canada writes: I think Obama passed Clinton in the Super Delagate count this past weekend.
  5. Rain Couver from Canada writes: Do not forget that there are still over 200 super delegates that are still undecided. Just because delegates are won in the state primaries, does not automatically commit super delegates who are not affiliated to states, but are important party members in some capacity. As good as it looks for Obama, do not celebrate yet.

When somebody gets 2025 delegates. I mean 2209....funny how Howard Dean's snit-fit over Michigan and Florida has turned this whole race into a farce. Methinks they'll be re-writing a few rules after this debacle, and quietly get rid of the superdelegates. Funny how a party who prides itself on populism leaves their Presidential candidate in the hands of party sockpuppets instead of the people.
  13. Mr. Justice from Canada writes: Florida Democrats and Michigan Democrats violated the rules of the organization to which they belong; this was their choice, and they now pay the penalty; they knew exactly what they were risking when they held their primaries before their national organization authorized them . . . the Democratic parties in those states bound themselves by a set of rules, they knew that the penalty for violation included not having a voice at the national convention through delegate votes; then they violated the rules anyway; oh, well . . . .

On the Creepublican side, the right-wingers have dropped their characterization of McCain as 'a liberal' (REALLY smart move, dullards). They are now trying to cast him as 'a centrist' (good luck with that one . . . HA HA !)
  14. crime of the century from This is not America, Canada writes:
The hyper competitive highway to nowhere. This horse race will get nowhere but around in circles. The dems have no chance of significantly changing the road america is on. The USA is a doomed and failing empire and Obama or Hillary or even Mcain as prez will accomplish nothing.
  15. Bubbles McBubbles from Trawna, Canada writes: Hillary will be dropping her endings and plucking on her banjo tomorrow night going for that vital cracker vote. Meanwhile Obama has McCain in his sights. Time for Emma to offer him the VP spot again. :D
  16. Mr. Justice from Canada writes: . . . and McCain will be the next US president.

All he has to say is 'Boo!' and the Democrats will scatter; needless to say, it's a proven technique.
  17. Brian Dell from Alberta, Canada writes: Mark from the US: See the 'History of Superdelegates' post at http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/2/15/04637/1558/471/457181 written by 'Poblano', the guy who blogs at FiveThirtyEight.com.

A reason for superdelegates is 'To check against a plurality, factional candidate who does not reflect the prevailing sentiment of the electorate.... rather than to override the will of the electorate, superdelegates were created in some sense to enforce it in elections whose results were skewed by odd delegate allocations or weak multi-way fields that would allow a fringe candidate to win a plurality.'

Superdelegates can thus mitigate some of the problems with the first-part-the-post system.

If the 'people' had made a very clear choice, the votes of the superdelegates would not matter.
  18. Harvey Mushman from cambridge, Canada writes: a l from Toronto, Canada writes: 'The thing is - if it is over for Senator Clinton, why do people keep voting for her and how is it that she can still win states?' Look no further than Obama's skin tone for your answer. I've lived and worked in the southern US and my observation is that for many of the (to use Hillary's characterization) 'hard-working white families' will vote along racial lines. This does not bode well for Democrats come the general election if many voters choose to vote for a white Republican instead of a 'black' (which I find rather funny as well given his mixed heritage) Democrat. Democrats may stay just home in droves or split their vote with Nader. If Obama can truly rise above all of this and move America past the racial stereotypes and hang ups of the past...he'll go down in history.
  19. S. Bluecat from Netherlands writes: Since when is West Virginia an 'important swing state'? What a joke. There's no contest here. Regardless of Hillary's supposed edge, fueled by reasons we dare not ask, a Democrat will not win the November election in this state. This is the same state that adamantly rejected Al Gore in 2000 because of his environmental position, and had it not been for the loss of their small amount of electoral votes there would have been no GWB. Of all the US states, they have THE LEAST concern for the environment no matter how you cut it. Their negligence is almost wholly responsible for the recent ratings showing Pittsburgh's bad air quality (there is virtually no heavily polluting industry left there, neither in the city nor in its metropolitan area), though nearly all of this blows in from the Weirton-Wheeling corridor on the prevailing west-southwesterly winds. Further, due to its lack of ethnic diversity most see no great need for social change, the sort that Obama talks about. I'd wager 95 percent of those white, blue-collar workers voting for Hillary will turn right around and vote McCain in November.
  20. Sam Patel from Vancouver, Canada writes: Vote for me instead. I can rack up debt and convince white rural republicans to vote for me rather than a 'unpatriotic muslim'.

First, I wouldn't point anybody to dailykos to try and get a clear view of anything. Second, I'm very well-versed on the role of the SD's and the reasons for their creation, and that paragraph you quoted ain't it. Google 'McGovern superdelegates', or just go to wikipedia. They have a good unbiased analysis that doens't make the SD's look like such altruistic knights in shiny armor. DailyKos....uh, I feel like I need a shower.

'If the 'people' had made a very clear choice, the votes of the superdelegates would not matter. '

To that I say 'why not just let the people make the choice, period?' Is overturning the will of 50.5% (just picking a number out of the air) of voting Democrats fair?

  25. A J from Calgary, Canada writes: In most Presidential primaries in the U.S., both Democratic and Republican, the presumptive nominee is identified incredibly early--often after the first two or three states have caucused or voted.

This year, a lot of voters whose primary votes have never really counted before get to enjoy the opportunity to participate in the decision-making.

Voters in the Appalachian region have voted pretty solidly for Clinton this year. West Virginians and Kentuckians are getting their chance to have their say before the whole thing is wrapped up. Good for them.

The voters in Montana and South Dakota, who are likely to be more supportive of Obama than Clinton, will probably be voting after Obama has already secured the majority of pledged delegates. Same for the last contest in Puerto Rico. Maybe, next time, their primaries will be earlier.

So as much as I'd like to see Democrats wrap up the nomination soon, I can't help but think it is a pretty good thing to see so many voters feeling that their primary votes really mattered this time.

And perhaps Clinton plans to celebrate her solid win in West Virginia, and then exit the race on that high note.

  30. Cheryl Nelson from Bloomington, MN, United States writes: Brian Dell from Alberta, Canada writes: Why is Barack Obama always described as a black man with a white mother instead of a white man with a black father? _________ Good one! I guess it all boils down to this...if you saw Barack Obama walking down the street, what would you see - a white man, a black man, or a little of both? Obama grew up in Hawaii - one of the most racially diverse states in the country. Many Hawaiians are of mixed ethnic and racial heritage. Mixed-race people there aren't a curiosity like in most of the contiguous U.S. They're the norm. Hawaii's racial mix is more Asian and Pacific Islander. Still, you are what you are. He moved to California to attend Occidental College. California is also a racially diverse state and home to plenty of mixed-race people. Even there, however, a mixed-race person has to confront where he/she fits in - if only to satisfy the perceptions of others. The rubber hit the road when Obama transferred to Columbia University in New York City. NYC is racially diverse in its own right. However - the Columbia campus is not far from Harlem - the Mecca of African American culture. Blacks look at Obama and see a guy who looks kind of black, but not quite. He speaks with no trace of Southern regionalization common even among northern blacks. The dirty little secret in American race relations is that many AAs have mixed-race DNA reaching back to the days of slavery. African Americans skin tones range widely, even within families. Whites (the majority), OTOH, key in on certain physical features and his skin color and *know* Obama is black. The idea that he's bi-racial doesn't even cross their minds unless they're told of it. What you see largely depends on one's own background.

  32. Mark H from Indy, United States writes: I think what Mary meant, Rain Couver, is that a higher percentage of Canada's population is white as compared to America (84% for Canada, 73% for the US). Whether that makes you 'lily white' compared to the US is debatable.
  33. Building an Ark from Eastern Slopes, Canada writes: A J from Calgary, Canada writes: ...And perhaps Clinton plans to celebrate her solid win in West Virginia, and then exit the race on that high note.

Let's hope so, otherwise she's putting the sword in Obamas neck - so that she may best be able to take one more shot at the President's office in four years time. Speaking of time - Hillary's is done, how best to save face and bow out will show you one of two things; Class or vindictiveness...
  34. Dave T from midwest, Canada writes: If Howard Cosell was alive, he would describe this contest as a heavyweight fight and would be saying things like 'what a gritty performance by Hillary Clinton, still throwing punches with both eyes swollen shut.' Or maybe he would say, 'I can't believe the referees haven't stopped this fight. This is a disgrace to boxing. Clearly, Hillary Clinton cannot continue.' Or maybe he would say,'Who said Barack Obama cannot take a punch? Look at him dancing around the ring while the sluggish Clinton can only clutch and grab.'

I think that when the dust settles Ms. Clinton's political potential to be ever considered as presidential material will be over. She has put herself into a do or die situation, through a poor politician performance. Everyone in her camp is in denial as they see that her chances are mathematically possible (ie 1,703 189 250 = victory), even though it is statistically impossible. She has to convince the super delegates to vote against the popular vote, and you still may not get the nomination.

The responses from the members of the Democratic party is not surprising, they have put the party ahead of their own political aspirations and hope. Now it is Ms. Clinton's turn.

While maintaining an ironclad commitment to Israel’s security, Barack Obama says he understood why a top Hamas adviser voiced support for his presidential bid.

“It’s conceivable that there are those in the Arab world who say to themselves, ‘This is a guy who spent some time in the Muslim world, has a middle name of Hussein and appears more worldly and has called for talks with people, and so he’s not going to be engaging in the same sort of cowboy diplomacy as George Bush,’” Obama said in an interview with The Atlantic.

  59. Emma Hawthorne from Canada writes: HI aging oldtool. That's the nicest thing a commentator has ever said to me. Thank you. Hi South Paw. Given that Hillary has almost half of college graduates and a preponderance of those ranging from high school to some university, she has significant support among those few Americans lucky enough to have an education. However, given that the most important thing now is that the Democrats must win, demographics need to be carefully analysed because the primaries only reflect interested groups who turned out, and are not a fair representation of the entire voting poulation. As I said earlier, indicators are that a Clinton ticket now with Obama later, really is a sure thing. She would handily beat McCain. But Obama could lose. That would be a terrible shame. No liberal minded individual wants that to happen.

If Obama was my twin or an even smarter sister of HIllary's, he wouldn't get my vote without Hillary's agenda. I want those 43 million people rescued now. Thousands are dying, yes, dying! each year for want of timely medical testing to catch disease early when lives can be saved. Thousands more Americans are being mowed down by avoidable crime. Hundreds of thousands of mostly men who could be learning trades and signing up for home ownership savings plans are rotting in prisons and ruminating over future crimes to stem their humilation and anger. Millions of American children can't get to life's starting line for want of help for their struggling or ill parents, a lack of enriching pre-schools, better public schools and more readiness programs.
And the most annoying thing is that doing the right thing is actually cheaper when you add up all of the costs, than not doing it.

Queen Street from Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Canada writes: Mrs. Clinton will go take the road to home and join the Kennedy, Kerry, Carter and Bush and will most likely make an argument on who killed more people, if Bush in the National Guard or Kennedy DUI. The bells are ringing and you guys are in the wrong parade. Today America is at the cross roads, like no long ago with Timothy Mc Veigh. Americans will have the opportunity to show the world how mature they are and why America is the world leader. You just watch!
  68. george miller from naples fla, United States Outlying writes: If you all have never been to West Virgina it is very beautiful, but the average person there only knows of Senator Bird. Bird is over 90, the leading Democrat in Virgina since Jesus was a boy, is not sure what day it is, and has told them to vote for Hillary. He could not remember her last name. Virginians have 200 yrs of coal, but they do not know that the Democrats want to tax it if elected. TV sets are not in every trailer park
  69. J. Bergin from Canada writes: John Edwards (who dropped out of the race several months ago) is getting 7% of the vote??? This really is an uneducated backward state.....no wonder Clinton won.
  70. Mr. Justice from Canada writes: If she plays the Gender-Victim Card every day, she will win the nomination.

. . . of course, if she quits the time-released oxycontin, she'll stop campaigning.
  71. Don Portz from Trochu AB, Canada writes: to george miller - well said. We complain when the USA makes comments on our political scene, but feel justified to exert our superiority of knowledge on everyonelse. May the best person win the nomination.
  72. Mike M from Sheunacadie N.S., Canada writes: Good night Emma, it used to be a bit of a challenge responding to your pro Hillary rants. Like your candidate, you are getting too kooky to even merit a response.
  73. george miller from naples fla, United States Outlying writes: Bergin, Sorry it's not as backward as you guessed. The highway's are remarkable, 21st century, and the people are friendly & content in most parts. They do not have a QEW daily gridlock with everyone living around a lake with new homes & living conditons which will soon develop slums and they can afford to kill the weeds, cut the grass and plant flowers along their highways. Look at your's, Ugly
  74. Brendan Caron from vancouver, Canada writes: Why do I keep thinking about Dewey. He was Donald Duck's nephew wasn't he? It has something to do about the United States of America doesn't it?
  75. The Special One... I Am Fantastic from Setanta TV, Canada writes: So Emma you'll vote Hillary based on a trumped up health care idea? What about her lying about her important past? What about her voting in favour of Iraq? How about her constant waffling in the wind on proposals because she thinks it will score her better fan base instead of sticking to her guns? And you truly think she'll handily beat McCain...tad dillusional?
Your darling Hillary is a crackpot, lying psychopath...then again so are her legions of followers.
  76. Randal Oulton from Canada writes: Hillary should run as an Independent. You hang in there, girl!
  77. Stewart Mawdsley from Canada writes: I think it's a shame. Obama's time to run should have been in 4-8 years when he was more experienced and had more substance. Hilary has 'baggage', but what is that really? People don't like her personality? The association w/ her husband? Remeber that most people who meet the most evil and hardcore right wing Bushies like Karl Rove find them quite charming in person (the devils always are).

We also know more about her than almost any presendential candidate previously, which I think is good. I think she has a lot of strengths, whereas, aside from Barack being a gifted oreator, what do we really know are his good qualities. Hilary has the strength to stand up to Republican attacks, I hope Obama does too... but I fear not. It would be horrid if after all that Bush has done to desecrate America the Republicans still managed to retain the white house.

Oh, and to the guy that said it was racist for whites to vote for Clinton, how about the 92 odd percent of blacks who vote for Obama? I'm sure that's all about merit.
  78. Randy D from Canada writes: Remember, both these people want to cancel NAFTA which almost everyone in the business community will tell you has been good for all concerned. The left wing loon-atics don't think so but creating wealth has never been an issue for most of them.
  79. Bubbles McBubbles from Trawna, Canada writes: Randal Oulton from Canada writes: 'Hillary should run as an Independent. You hang in there, girl!'

Hillary will never do that. She needs the dems to bail her out of that huge deficit she's run up.

Your envy of America is HYSTERICAL.

You are the epitome of the ignorant Canadian.
  82. Ed Long from white Rock, Canada writes: This is her only chance for her dream. She won't quit but will have to be emphatically defeated.
  83. brian silva from Canada writes: Hillary has no dignity, shame, nor manners - what she'll do next is anyone's guess - most likely whore herself out to the remaining superdelegates in order to gain a few more votes.
  84. Mary Smith from United States writes:

    Timely medical care?

Why do you think Canadians are sent to America for health care? HA! HA!

Americans lucky enough to get an education? 8 of the top ten Universities are in the US. Nada for Canada.

How are the Nobel Prizes coming there in Canada? HA! HA!

    Innovation? America.

You're embarrassing yourself with your Canadian Inferiority Complex.
  85. Mary Smith from United States writes:

    One more thing;

Hillary is a lying, conniving, INCOMPETENT, corrupt, disingenuous, megalomaniac loser, which is why Americans are rejecting her. No wonder why she's your hero. What a dimwit you are.
  86. Harper should go back to his evil layer (ASAP) from Canada writes: Americans are almost as big of a joke as the canadians conservative party. Anything other than Obama just isn't acceptable. Real change is needed.
  87. David Simon from Canada writes: This is very interesting-you don't see McCain losing GOP primaries do you?
  88. Mary Smith from United States writes:

    Mark H. from Indy

The US Census Bureau 2006 lists Whites (non-Hispanics) at 66.4%.

Yet stupid Canadians comment about race in the US.

  90. moksha guadeloupe from Sodom, Canada writes: Emma Hawthorne -

You say 'Hundreds of thousands of mostly men who could be learning trades and signing up for home ownership savings plans are rotting in prisons and ruminating over future crimes to stem their humilation and anger'. - WTF is that? Are you trying to say that Hillary will let them all out? That Hillary will loan them all money (at reasonable interest rates) to buy homes? That sniper-duckin', beer-swillin', Michigan-countin' hard-workin' white American Hillary will rehabilitate the entire country? Wow. Good for her. At first I assumed that you were just trying to be funny. But after reading some of your other posts, I'm starting to think that you may actually be serious in your evaluation of this contest. I'm really worried about you Emma.

On another note, you are quite correct that Hillary should win the nomination. Also, I think the Montreal Canadiens have a valid argument that they should be in this year's final. After all, they didn't get to play any games in Michigan or Florida during the playoffs.

  91. Tony . from Waterloo, Canada writes: Harvey Mushman from cambridge, Canada writes: 'I've lived and worked in the southern US and my observation is that for many of the (to use Hillary's characterization) 'hard-working white families' will vote along racial lines.'

Of course they will, they'll vote along racial lines straight to McCain, or any other Republican for that matter.

The fact is that the VAST bulk of the people that wouldn't vote for Obama because of his skin colour are already not voting for the guy because he's a democrat.

They can only vote against him once!
  92. Scott Anderson from London, Canada writes: Typical bad editoral written artical? LOL

They have Clinton as Ms. Clinton's throughout the whole document

Maybe Mrs. Clinton would be betteratleast until she looses then kicks Bill to the curb.
  93. Scott Anderson from London, Canada writes: A man died and went to heaven. As he stood in front of St. Peter at the
Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him. He asked,
    'What are all those clocks?'
St. Peter answered, 'Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a
Lie-Clock. Every time you lie the hands on your clock will move.'
'Oh,' said the man, 'Whose clock is that?'
'That's Mother Teresa's. The hands have never moved, indicating that she
    never told a lie.'
'Incredible,' said the man. 'And whose clock is that one?'
St. Peter responded, 'That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have moved
twice, telling us that Abe told only two lies in his entire life.'
'Where's Hillary Clinton's clock?' asked the man.
'Hillary's clock is in Gabriel's office. He's using it as a ceiling fan.'
  94. Joe Calgarian from Canada writes: So Americans have to choose between the 'I have a dream' candidate, the 'I dodged sniper fire' candidate and the 'Bomb, bomb, Iran' candidate. Come election time, I think they should write in 'Other' on the ballot.
