Pat Billings from CDN, Canada writes: All that whining about the officiating finally paid off for the Flyers. Similar to the game #4 of the Stars/Wings game, the officiating breaks all went to the 0-3 team. The Pens only got two PPs despite the Flyers spending the whole night initiating after-the-whistle scrums and continuing their streaks of cheap shots (i.e. Upshall).

Mariposa Belle from Leacockland, Canada writes: Flyers win tonight is a result of reverting to the club's history. Hit the opposition at every opportunity and have the zebras sort out the legality. Worked in the past and there is no reason why the club should not try it now.
I expect Sunday will see even more as the current edition of the Flyers attempt to don the mantle of the Bullies - which will be unsuccessful, but will make for an interesting game.

greg panke from Canada writes: I wasn't sure if it was just me, but it seems most hockey fans think the same thing, the refs give the Flyers a lot of breaks. It really would be interesting to know how much instruction the refs get from the league to call the games with a particular result in mind.
The Flyers and the refs tonight are an embarrassment to the league.
A bit of Karma in the game was how Shero Junior lost to the same, albeit milder, tactics that his father used to help the Flyers "win" their undeserved Cups.
I think a retroactive removal of the Flyer name from the Cup and have it replaced by the 2nd place teams should be considered. If the steroid users in the Olympics can lose their medals, the Flyers should be able to lose their "vicories" too, the only difference was that the cheating in the NHL was league sanctioned.- Posted 15/05/08 at 11:20 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

If its about all the whining...geez, do you remember Gretzky?
He was a world class whiner...on just about every call. Especially when he was with the Oilers.
Putting the onus on the ref to make the call, playing borderline...is a lot different from collusion with the league. That is pretty far fetched.
The retroactive thing was pretty funny too. Got any more far fetched ideas? I could use another laugh!

That said... so what.
The refs aren't putting the puck in the net (taking it out sometimes).

For the record... I hate the Flyers.... have since 74.... only cheered for them once and that was the year they became the first expansion team to win a cup.

Pat Billings from CDN, Canada writes: Loucks. 10 mins would surely solve the problem. Unfortunately, it's not going to happen because it always involves one of the Flyers top players. No way the refs throw those guys out for 10 mins at a time.
What Upshall and Richards did at the end of the game was completely classless (yet completely expected by a Flyer). Sadly, there is nothing the Pens can do to retaliate without incurring a penalty. There is no downside for the Flyers to play this way. These guys are protected by the rules (instigator) and by the refs (who let it happen without any meaningful repurcussions).
If anything, the first regular season game between those two next season is going to be a must-see. Therien has a long memory and loves to resort back to the "junior stuff".- Posted 15/05/08 at 11:39 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

The rule today is that the refs send one of them off for 2 minutes.... stupid rule. Cherry was suggesting they send all involved off for 10 minutes.... it used to be they all went off for 2... players didn't care.
10 minutes automatic (delay of game) would stop it. Players don't like sitting for 10 minutes.
As for Upshall and Richards.... I'd take those guys on my team anytime. In fact... I can't think of too many teams in the league that wouldn't... maybe on Detroit and Pittsburg they would be 3rd/4th line players.... nobody else.
Agreed the first game next year will be something to watch. Therien and Stevens coached against each other in the AHL as well.

I don't see what anyone would want players like Avery, Downie and Upshall on their team, but the answer for the Pens right now doesn't really lie in Georges Laraques.
It lies with Crosby, Malkin, Hossa and Fleury.
Pens should close this one out at home in Game #5...

Picked a Philly/Pens conference final though.
If I was a kid and was picking one of the last four to be a fan of .... I would probably pick the Pens... but I'm not a kid and I'm a little sick and tired of all the hype about Crosby.
He is a really good (Canadian) player. He plays with the heart of a lion. He is definitely a special player.
But he is not the best player in the league... maybe not even the best Canadian player in the league. I doubt that he will captain the 2010 Olympic team... but I guarantee he will be on that team.
Players that are older but better... and I have seen them play "live".... Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Iginla, Datsyk, Lecalvier.

Come on, post-whistle hand-bags aside, there's lots to admire: players like Briere, Biron, Richards, Lupal, and Umberger, and the grit and mental strength to stave off what everyone (even their fans! See their faces after Staal's 2nd goal?!) except them reckons is the inevitable. And I'm a Habs fan -- we had a good look at Philly in our own series. (Like Scot, I temporarily liked the Flyers in 74, jumping aboard in the hopes they'd punish the Rangers for eliminating Montreal). But some of you guys need to be a little more fair. If the Flyers were playing in the Western Conference, their style would provoke little comment. If they were chosen to play an exhibition against Russia you'd be buying orange tees. Hard to see it otherwise than Pens going to Finals. However, I for one would love the Flyers to steal on in Pittsburgh just to make it a little more interesting.

I was right in not placing the motherlode into the hands of Mariposa. Had I done so, she would have switched to the single malt for this series leaving only chips on the plate for the victorious wagerer at the end of the next series. Mr. Miller disdainfully disses Toronto cod but probably because he is unaware of the new irridescent species found only at the outflow pipes of the Pickering nuclear reactor - a truly phosphorescent glow as you eat treat. Mr. Loucks is already demonstrating lack of conviction in his choices for the Finals, explaining to Mariposa that the worst he can do is tie. Spoken like a true Leaf fan who never call ties overtime losses and there is no one point awarded in this case. Glad to hear from Mr. Weston that this wager has made its way to the Wings dressing room. That added pressure will make Osgoode perform sub par in the Finals and give my fledgling Pens a better chance of victory. Or thinking in such a way that when he misses his check he sticks his skate up in the guy's face to hold him back....Jeff Carter is the only guy on that team that I would want among the skaters(Biron is pretty good.) Richards is a waste of talent playing an idiot's game.

Have to agree with some of the above posters, the hype around Crosby nowadays is ridiculous. I heard a seagull sh@t on Crosby the other day....must have been a Flyers fan...no class! Pat Billings from CDN, Canada writes: Both Richards and Upshall (less so) are solid players. Still, it doesnt excuse the boorish behavior they displayed last night. Upshall took a cheap "Downie-esque" headhunting run at Stall with 5 seconds left. Then Richards, hacked the crap out of Crosby on the final faceoff until the kid had no choice but to stand up for himself. I don't know what Therien was thinking, I would have had Laraque and Ruutu on the ice to close that one out. Sadly, that's prototypical Flyers hockey and the refs allow it to happen. It's unbelievable that the Pens only got 2 PPs last night despite all the after-the-whistle scrums the Flyers initiated.
I still stand by my statement that the only toughness these Flyers have is after the whistle and through cheapshots. Most of the time they get outplayed and outhit. Only when the play is whistled dead can they actually make physical contact with an opposing player. The other reason I can't stand this Flyers team...the constant whining about officiating. They're putting Pat Quinn's leafs team to shame with their level of whining.

P McLean from Canada writes: Ryan M, I'm not a Habs fan. Far from it. But I can tell you this: I hate the Red Wings more than any team, but their players have never done anything that would remotely make think about them what I think about the Flyers. If you want to call Richards a true leader, then I feel sorry for your warped view on things. He has the talent to be a quality player, no doubt. Whether he is following orders or not, only he and the coaches know, but more and more Richards shows himself to me to be just a little above a Steve Downie with more talent, or Sean Avery with just a notch below on the level of the antics. Give credit where it's due? Maybe to Martin Biron. All but two of Philly's penalties came when Penguins wnet o the box as well. In a game like this, they hang on for dear life to a 3-2 lead, when they've been killed in the first 3. The difference in the first 3 games? The Flyers, a team that commits penalties, were actually penalized for them. Forced to skate witht eh Pens, they didn't have a chance(although I will admit the call on Hatcher in game 2? was weak....but considering all the headshots that haven't been called.) I stand by what I said at the beginning of the series: The Flyers, playing their game, give the refs at least 30 opportunities a game to send them to the box. The less the refs blow the whistle, the better the Flyers' chances. If they actually have to play hockey, they have no chance, like the first 3 games showed.

R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Ryan M from Ottawa, Canada: Before this post, can you point out to me on this particular thread where I even mentioned that Crosby was from Nova Scotia? However, let's review some of the actual history of this fictitious entity known as "Crosby hype" that has become the theme of the latter part of this thread. All of a sudden, everyone in Canada realized that Lindros was not going to live up to his expectations as the "next one." Thus, Gretzky decides to say some unknown fifteen year old in Nova Scotia will be the future heir. Of course, that's Crosby's fault. At seventeen, Crosby scores from behind the net in an absolutely meaningless QJMHL game. Cherry has his typical taxpayer funded, national, temper tantrum and decides that Crosby is a "hot dog." Invites his pal, Brendan, to come on the air to share his views. That's Crosby's fault too. Further, nineteen year old Crosby wins the Hart trophy and the scoring title in his second year of play. Again, Crosby's fault. Anyways, those who talk about "Crosby hype" merely represent those Canadians who hate to see someone succeeding in their chosen field of endeavour. Glad that gullible people like you suck up the jingoistic antics of the Flyers and their faithful-- That's their goal, genius!

In the past, Cherry did the exact same thing to Gretzky that he currently does to Crosby because for the most part Canadians eat that kind of garbage up... The theatrics of the "blue collared" coach in the bad suit sticking it to the star plays to our basest instincts...
Rather than celebrate the top players in the game, Cherry has his love in with the Shayne Corson and Darcy Tucker types of the league who we, "average joes" can better relate to.
The perspective of the average Canadian hockey fan gets so warped that we start to be unable to even recognize who is talented and who is not...
In three sets of Winter Olympic games since professional players were allowed to compete, Canada has only won once because we continue to refuse to send our most talented younger players.

This was pointed out in a previous thread ... same goes for Tiger Woods, A-Rod, et al.
As much as I'm not much a Cherry fan, his perspective does provide some balance in the debate ... a team is made up of all sorts of players, not just the superstars ... we need the "plumbers" too and, from time to time, let's give them both some credit ... and some exposure too!

I absolutely agree that there needs to be a balance between the superstars and the plumbers.... The NYR are a perfect example of that. Before the salary cap came into existence, the Rangers were always the most expensive NHL team to repeatedly not make the playoffs because none of their stars would do the necessary grunt work.
However, my real point is that Crosby did not author his own "hype" -- likely Tiger Woods doesn't do so either. These guys just play their game, and as a fan, I just choose to celebrate the players that are among the top of their game instead of applauding those who continually denigrate them...

are against us and that's what we like. Remember Rocky! It's not over just yet. Let's not talk about Wings-Pens final so soon. Dismissive talk bred's determination!- Posted 16/05/08 at 3:54 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

R Miller from Halifax, Canada writes: Eric Thomas from Broomall, Pa, United States:
Of course, there is good and bad everywhere, but as one G&M poster pointed out earlier this week, one's reputation tends to follow one around for life. Montreal fans are fickle.... Toronto fans are delusional.... Philly fans are jingoistic.
There is really nothing gritty about breaking someone's ankle or breaking a goaltender's fingers with an after the whistle chop with a hockey stick. In fact, these are cowardly actions and yes, that is, in fact, dirty.
Speaking of "determination," do you really think Crosby and co. would wish to return to Philly for Game 6 after the antics of Game #4?
