South Africans take out rage on immigrants

  1. Jay B. from Canada writes: Truly shocking, clearly a reflection of economic despair. Good government is sorely required in many African states. It would be immoral not to extend a hand up by those that are better off.
  2. Cathy Gillies from Canada writes: I had the good fortune of visiting South Africa in 1999 when my brother lived in Johannesburg. His housekeeper was from Zimbabwe and unforunately died of AIDS. I would sincerely hope that the people of S. Africa who are contributing to this violence would remember their own history and support the oppressed of Zimbabwe.

    When war will start in South Africa after drought, they will immigrate in Toronto like refuges. And police will lost control, like in USA for some regions or some towns.They don't know language of this civilization.

William Lundy from Ottawa, Canada writes: One can not but have some sympathy for the poor of South Africa's townships as they struggle to improve their lot in life and face a major influx of illegal migrants. The people who are most adversely affected but any government's inability or unwillingness to control illegal migration are those at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid. Zimbabweans are of course the largest number of such illegal migrants and this influx must be laid directly at the feet of Mbeki who has stood by and watch Robert Maugabe destroy what should have been South Africa's partner in fuelling the economic development of all of southern Africa. The UNHCR and Canada also share responsibility for encouraging and assisting South Africa to establish a first world asylum system that South Africa could not afford. People from all over the continent have come to South Africa, claimed asylum and simply stayed-on as the asylum system collapsed under the pressure of numbers. Finally, South African leaders have been under pressure from other African states to dismantle the 'aparthaid era' immigration controls of visa requirements. This has allowed large numbers of other Africans to enter and then over-stay their authorized entry. The CIDA funded Southern Africa Migration Project help South Africa to establish what is probably model immigration legislation; certainly better than Canada's current law. However, model legislation is not enough; there must also be the political will to enforce the hard parts of immigration law nor simply celebrate the soft parts.

    Think of the Balkan states that popped into little nations, only to fight some more when people within those now smaller nations - decided they wanted even smaller 7x7 nations.

    Again, as a species we rarely apply our own freedoms and rights on others.

    BTW, the problems in the USA stem from economics. There are white people that are commiting crimes in the US to!

    There is a large # of Africans in this country and believe or not most of the ones I have met are congenial, genuine, good people

    Of course IT HAS HAPPENED IN THE USA, back at the beginning of the GREAT DEPRESSION when Mexicans in the USA were rounded up and taken to the border and pushed out.

    History being written by the VICTORS(of course) records they were assisted to leave voluntarily, or so I have read.

    When times are hard citizens look for scapegoats and FOREIGN IMMIGRANTS OR REFUGEES ARE AN EASY TARGET!

    But look at OIL......People BLAME "Speculators" or "Greedy" Oil Company Bosses for the high price of gasoline and howl for punishment in higher taxes and royalties------EVEN THO THESE MEASURES ARE A PYRRHIC VICTORY where the complainers find themselves FEELING THE PUNISHMENT IN EVEN HIGHER PUMP PRICES!!!

    And the real CULPRITS ARE CENTRAL BANKS POURING OUT OCEANS OF WORTHLESS CURRENCY EACH DAY.....and claiming it's actually worth something!
