Toews to run in next federal election

The Canadian Press

Winnipeg — A senior federal cabinet minister says he plans to run in the next election and denies he's being pushed off Prime Minister Stephen Harper's team.

Media reports have said that Vic Toews is expected be named a judge in Manitoba and some have suggested there is concern about how the minister's personal life could affect Tory fortunes.

The riding he represents is in what is known as Manitoba's Bible belt.

But Mr. Toews, president of the Treasury Board, wouldn't answer questions today about whether he will be appointed to the bench, saying he doesn't deal in hypotheticals.

He also said he wouldn't comment about his divorce, which is before the courts in Manitoba, saying he doesn't talk about his personal life.

In answer to a question about whether he is being forced out, Mr. Toews replied: “That would be news to me.”

Mr. Toews was Stephen Harper's tough justice minister before he was moved to Treasury Board.
