American Idol has deep meaning. Seriously
How do we affix meaning to American Idol?Quite easily, actually. Its meaning is in its startling contrast to almost everything in the popular culture, especially on TV. While an entire media industry is devoted to remote celebrities, Idol is about everyday people. While television has become staggeringly violent and fixates on the gross, Idol is just nice. Nobody gets shot, tortured or dies a horribly violent death.
