KABUL Officials say a NATO soldier and two Afghan civilians have been killed in a protest over the shooting of the Koran by a U.S. sniper in Iraq.
NATO spokesman Major Martin O'Donnell said the alliance soldier was hit by gunfire, and it is not clear who had fired.
He said the two civilians were killed when police opened fire on protesters.
Maj. O'Donnell says the protest Thursday took place near an airfield in western Ghor province. It became violent when demonstrators threw rocks and set nearby tents on fire.
He said one NATO soldier and seven civilians were wounded.
Ghor provincial police chief Shah Jahan Noori said about 1,000 demonstrators had gathered to protest the Koran shooting.
