Canadian medical-aid worker kidnapped in Haiti

Associated Press

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitian and UN police are searching for a Canadian medical aid worker kidnapped in the hills above the Caribbean country's capital of Port-au-Prince.

Thirty-two-year-old Nadia Lefebvre was abducted early Wednesday.

UN police spokesman Fred Blaise says Ms. Lefebvre was on a short-term assignment in Haiti for the Paris-based medical organization Medecins du Monde, also known as Doctors of the World.

A spokeswoman for group declined comment.

The upscale Tomasin neighbourhood where Ms. Lefebvre was abducted is home to many foreigners and upper-class Haitians. Officials say a kidnapping network has been working in the area for months.

Mr. Blaise said Thursday he does not know whether a ransom has been demanded.
