Tories appear set to survive confidence vote

Globe and Mail Update

OTTAWA — The Conservative government appears set to survive its first confidence vote since the Maxime Bernier controversy erupted.

Three votes are expected in the House of Commons Monday night on controversial immigration reforms that are part of a larger federal budget implementation bill.

All opposition parties have excoriated the Tories over the immigration changes.

A government defeat on any of the votes would bring down Prime Minister Stephen Harper, but the Liberals are not ready yet to fight an election.

The changes would place highly coveted immigrants — like doctors — on the fast-track into Canada, but it would become more difficult for others to get in the country.

Mr. Bernier was forced to resign as foreign affairs minister last week after it was revealed that he left classified documents at the home of his ex-girlfriend, who had past ties to criminal bikers.
