Sixties style laced with ironic flair

In the era of HBO on the one hand and Basic Instinct 2 on the other, it has become possible to argue that the television serial is now outstripping film in its achievements as a narrative form. Mad Men, the American cable drama set in a Manhattan ad agency in 1960 and now enjoying its network premiere (CTV, Sunday, 10 p.m.), is the kind of TV that bolsters the argument. Take, for example, the third act of the third episode.
