LONDON — 'Oh, you're going to visit her, are you?" the taxi driver says, as he drives, apparently aimlessly, through the back roads of rural Essex. "I don't think I'd like to mention her name." His irritation seems to have impaired his sense of direction. He finally finds the farmhouse, where the chatelaine is waiting, not altogether patiently, and where the feeling of scorn is clearly mutual.
