The Business from Canada writes: Nicely written, and I agree with John's premise: a tournament in which Greece does not progress is a better tournament.
It's like the New Jersey Devils winning the Cup in the old NHL -- trap, trap, trap, grab & hold, grab & hold, grab & gold.

Dave Hunt from Canada writes: The Business From Canada: What a damn comment---you and the author of this article do not understand sport when it comes to using what you're given in the most effective manner.

J Slavery from Ontario, Canada writes: Please change the headline! Ancient Greek philosophy is as beautiful and exciting as Brazil vs. Argentina. There's more originality and attack in a single aphorism from Heraclitus than the current Greek national team generated in all of Euro 2004. Damn the team, but spare philosophy.

RE: The Czech devastating USA 3:0 at the WC and everybody called them the "team" to win the whole thing and then..."Stupid" plays vs. Ghana and inability to beat Italy and they were OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Teams such as France who were basically out beat "togo",yes that is a country and it is not spelt "to go"....
And ended up in the WC Final vs. Italy ,2 years ago...
So don't stick your feet in your mouths...
Euro is even more compatative then the World Cup....- Posted 11/06/08 at 2:38 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Jay D from Canada writes: I think the author overstates the inability of other teams to read the Greek's strategy. I'm fairly certain every team that was beaten 1-0 by the Greeks in the knockout stage last Euro knew exactly what they'd face. However, as anyone who has played the game knows, when 9 of the defenders are committed to defending the box getting a goal is not easy. Kudos to Sweden for breaking down Greece enough times to win.

The Business from Canada writes: Dave Hunt,
You miss my point: the Greeks play the style that gives them the best chance to win, but that style is boring and diminishes the game.- Posted 11/06/08 at 9:08 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Dave Hunt from Canada writes: The business: The games is about results not "make up art".
Again--for a country of around 10 million--they didn't too bad last time did they? Who knows what will happen from now on.
As far as the title of this article--it sucks--the author and his ancestors would probably be in the caves "chewing rocks" if it wasn't for the Greek philosophers.- Posted 11/06/08 at 9:53 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Dave Hunt from Canada writes: Here is some real philosophy---just went through some more artcicles about the game---It seems that the Greeks take the lose like real men--they admit that they played bad--any "philosophy" on this characteristic Mr. Doyle?

The Business from Canada writes: Dave Hunt,
Me, I prefer the Red Wings circa 2008 over 'clutch and grab' New Jersey circa 2003. Remember how many teams copied that style of play because it worked? And it sucked!
It's the same with soccer -- if the Greeks found recurring success with that boring style other nations would follow suit. Fortunately other, even smaller nations (Holland) play a far more pleasing (and successful) style.
Again, I hope Greece goes out early.- Posted 11/06/08 at 1:07 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
