United Auto Workers union endorses Obama

The Associated Press

Lansing, Mich. — The United Auto Workers international executive board has endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said Tuesday in a news release that Mr. Obama has given the country a positive vision for a better America and concrete plans to achieve it.

Mr. Gettelfinger notes the Illinois senator has pledged to rebuild the country's manufacturing base and assist the auto industry.

The UAW represents more than 1 million active and retired workers in automobile manufacturing, aerospace, construction equipment, health care, higher education and other industries.

The endorsement continues organized labor's swing over to the Democratic presumptive nominee.
