Police shut down gun smuggling ring

A cross-border smuggling ring that was shipping firearms into Canada from Detroit has been broken, authorities said yesterday, resulting in seven arrests and the seizure of more than 30 weapons, including several fully automatic machine pistols. All were handguns and most were believed to be destined for the Toronto area, said Inspector Steve Clegg of the Ontario Provincial Police's weapons enforcement unit, which led the Canadian end of the eight-month investigation.
